Nikon Coolpix S9900: Retro style 30x superzoom (hands-on)

The Nikon Coolpix S9900 supplants the S9700 and brings with it a new design, adding some retro feel to this superzoom camera. It has grown slightly over the previous model, but it brings with it a big change, and that's a 3-inch vari-angle display on the rear.

Very interesting little camera

I was looking for a easy to carry camera that fit into my Go Bag or pocket when I didn't want to carry my DSLR. After months of research, this camera became available. It meets or exceeds every requirement except shooting in RAW. I can live with that.

Easy To Use; Good Image Quality; Great Zoom; Large Clear LCD; Small / Compact

No RAW

Cigarette packet slim, the S9900 is just about thin enough to slip into a spare pocket. Indeed, at 112 x 66 x 40mm (4.5 x 2.6 x 1.60-in) and 289g (10.2oz), its space-saving design and light weight are ideal for a trip around town or for jetting off to the other side of the world.

30x optical zoom range; Slim; lightweight yet solid build; Very effective Vibration Reduction system; Vari-angle LCD screen

Can't shoot in raw quality mode; No built-in or optional viewfinder; Image quality is a little lacking; LCD isn't a touchscreen

Image quality is good rather than great, but the Nikon S9900 is packed with great features and the price is right.

Nikon Coolpix S9900 Review

Features Handling Performance Verdict Specification The Nikon Coolpix S9900 updates the S9700 and is a classicly styled camera designed to be the ideal travel camera, featuring a pocketable body, a 30x optical zoom lens, a vari-angle screen, fullHD video recording, built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS.

30x optical zoom lens; 2 year warranty; Good colour reproduction; Wi-Fi and GPS built in; Full manual controls; Good value for money; Good 3inch screen; 1cm macro mode

Soft images - detail could be better; Low resolution panoramic photos; Tripod position could be better; The addition of a vari-angle screen has added to the size and weight of the camera; Basic Wi-Fi app - needs improvement

Use for travel photos, keeps GPS locations of photos so you can see on maps on computer. nice wireless features, fantastic photos from such a small camera, zoom is great! I use it on travel when the Nikon D700 is just too big to carry around.

Nikon S9900 review

The Nikon S9900 is an update to the S9700 , a pocket ultra-zoom camera that we really liked when we tested it in 2014. It uses what appear to be the same 30x lens and 16-megapixel sensor, and once again includes both Wi-Fi and GPS.

Overall as expected

Although slightly heavier than my previous Nikon, the S9900 is proving to be a good purchase. However, I miss the "museum" option and Nikon has not provided a substitute feature. Haven't had it long enough to comment any further.

The camera arrived in its own box but was place in a much larger shipping container with no packing; which meant that the product rattled around in transit
