WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra Review

Western Digital released the My Cloud EX2 Ultra in early February . This high performance 2-bay NAS comes with a few added benefits in comparison to its predecessor, the My Cloud EX2.

Very easy setup; Good price; Built to support media among other content

Fewer third party plugins/apps than alternatives

The WD My Cloud EX2 is easily one of the simplest, yet feature-packed NAS devices that we've used. The fact that the drives can be upgraded whenever you want is a great plus as well.

Features; Ease of use

Price; Transfer speed for multiple files

Good for Backing Up Computers

I assigned a fixed IP address to the drive before attaching it to my system. It worked from the very start. I used True Image software to backup my computer to the drive. It took less than 2 hours to backup 650 GB of HD videos using a wired connection (not wireless).

This is the first Cloud Server I have ever set up. Easy to set up multiple accounts with multiple folders with different access to each. Users can only see the files that they have access to. Having secured cloud access on a secured hard drive with Raid 1 backup is just what I was looking for.

2 x WD Red drives in Raid 1 (default) gives me reliable storage for my data; Easy Cloud set up and access

Cloud folders can only be either Read, or Read/Write; I wanted to have a Write only folder that multiple people could write to but not see what others have written

Unreliable, and slow.

Stay away from this NAS device, very unreliable, Synology offers much better and reliable NAS devices. The reviews for this NAS device seemed okay originally when I ordered it, but in the past month their server has gone down three times, and when you call them, they start talking about how you...

Nothing

Mycloud server goes down every 10 days, and you can not remotely access data, it also impacts the internal usage of the server as well at times; Very unreliable; I will never ever buy another NAS device from WD; Also very slow read/write, nothing like they have advertised

In case anyone else out there is wondering, this NAS is not powerful enough to function as a home media server. Would be great for someone who just needs a device on their network for passive backups and file storage, but do not buy this if you are hoping to use it to stream music and movies to...

The setup seemed more complicated than it should be

I got it set up but could not get Time Machine to connect. I loaded other files without any issues. But when I tried to connect to the web interface the next day it would not let me connect. I ended up resetting the NAS twice and after the second time I could not access the web interface at all.

More complicated than needed menus need to be simplified. Requiring third party app to access data stored on device.

Good value for money, set-up was okay. Bought mainly for macOS Time Machine back-ups and music server for playing on my multi-room Sonos set up. Does both well, cheaper than my previous Synology NAS which lasted well but I didn't use all of the feature hence went for this to save cash.

best on win 8

a little harder to use on win7 and earlier systems.. best on win 8.1 or win10... nice though, on an all hard wired network it is a handy unit and super affordable!
