Nice desktop printer with one exception

Nice little printer, but users were complaining it would go to sleep and they would manually have to turn the printer on to print. Turns out when the printer is connected via USB (which it was) it will go to sleep and power down the USB port, making the printer unreachable.

Small footprint; fast time-to-first-page; duplexes; excellent print quality

Cannot disable sleep when using USB interface; Fussy driver install

Very Buggy Start

I have had an HP B/W printer for a decade and I finally decided to upgrade. It took over an hour on the phone with Tech Support to get this thing to finally install correctly. It randomly prints triangles over my reports. And it still won't print from tray 3.

Works great in CUPS in Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi

We've had no problems at all with this printer. I was able to set it up in CUPS on a Raspberry Pi no problem. My version of CUPS does not have the specific driver for it, but I chose "HP LaserJet 4 Plus pcl3, hpcups 3.14.6 (color, 2-sided printing)" and it works perfectly.

HP LaserJet Pro M401

The $399 HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dw bundles all of HP's latest technologies into a tight package; you get Smart Install that eliminates the hassle of installing off a driver disc, ePrint remote access, and walk-up printing through the USB port on the front, but the 3.5-inch touch-screen display...

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dw's direct USB port; wireless connectivity; and remote printing features offer a variety of ways to interact with the printer

HP Smart Install only works with Windows; and the flimsy touch-screen display impedes usability

Compact and efficient, this single-function mono laser delivers fine-looking text (and quickly enough for its class), but its cost per page and small trays relegate it to light duty.

Solid print quality; Respectable print speeds; Compact footprint for a mono laser; Energy-efficient; Loaded with mobile features

Moderately high cost per page; Small input and output trays

Had to return

We had to return this printer because it would randomly start feeding through sheets of paper with hieroglyphics on the top edge. This was after reinstalling the drive and firmware from the internet. No change.

This is an excellent printer - we have one at work and I decided to buy one for home use. If you don't need colour this must be one of the best printers on the market - very quick and connected to a router will also print from iPads and smart phones.

HP LaserJet Pro M402dw

The HP M402dw gets lots of points for its fast speed, but misses out on being our top pick in its category because its claimed cost per page is on the high side. That's still enough to make it a strong contender.

Duplexer; 250-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose tray standard; Maximum 900-sheet paper capacity; Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, and NFC; Supports Cloud printing

Low-quality photo output; even for a monochrome laser
