Review: How does Apple's new iPhone 5s perform as a camera?

The iPhone 5s features a very good camera that’s easy to use and delivers strong results with little user intervention. It’s a logical extension of the Apple design philosophy, with evolutionary performance increases and feature extensions. iPhone photographers looking to trade up will find much to like in the 5s, but it’s not likely to lure users who prefer larger screens or are committed to other mobile operating systems.

Good exposure across a range of situations; Good image detail, restrained noise reduction; Pleasing color rendition; Good flash with notably accurate color; Very responsive operation, negligible shutter lag; Very fast shot-to-shot time, 10 fps continuous burst; Very easy-to-use camera app; Panorama mode better than most; Fun slow motion video capture; Effective HDR mode with very little ghosting; Digital video stabilization works relatively well; Well-designed gallery (Photos) app;

Less detail in good light than some higher-res sensors; Minimal manual control in camera app; Photographic ergonomics not the best; Finicky focus confirmation can lead to missed focus; Smallish screen; No optical image stabilization; No dedicated, two-stage shutter button; Underexposed video in very low-light conditions; Filter images only exportable at low resolution;

Apple iPhone 5S review

The iPhone 5S is still a decent phone, but our current advice is to go for the iPhone SE if you can afford it. Although it doesn't have an upgraded screen compared to the iPhone SE, the huge leap in performance and camera quality makes it a much better - not to mention more future-proof - choice.

iPhone 5s review

iOS lives up to the hype; Truly beautifully hardware; An unbeatable App Store;

Screen feels increasingly small; Lacks the liveliness of Android; Currently few ways to use the extra grunt;

Apple iPhone 5s review

This phone has appeared in our Best budget smartphones 2016 list.

Apple's iPhone 5s has a small screen by 2013 standards and is unlikely to attract users switching from large screen Android devices, but it remains the best smartphone Apple has ever released. The useful fingerprint sensor, a faster processor and improved low light camera performance will keep most iPhone users satisfied.

Touch ID is genuinely useful; Improved low light camera performance; Excellent performance;

Average battery life; Same sized 4in screen; Touch ID needs more support;

Apple iPhone 5S review: Same look, small screen, big potential

Apple no longer sells the iPhone 5S. Though you may still be able to scoop one up new or used from a third-party, you're better off buying the iPhone SE, the least expensive model in Apple's current lineup, which starts at $349, £265 or AU$465. That noted, if you can hold out until September, it's highly likely that you'll have a new batch of iPhones to choose from as well as lower prices for the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and perhaps the iPhone SE -- if it's not discontinued or updated.

Apple iPhone 5s (16GB, Gold) - Excellent review

Apple’s pattern of iteration isn’t smooth when it comes to the iPhone . It bumps along: a new case design one year, more subtle advancements the next. The iPhone 5s is, as the name implies, a phone that doesn’t look much different from last year’s iPhone 5.

Touch ID fingerprint sensor; camera flash adjusts to ambient light temperature; big speed improvement over iPhone 5

Screen still feels small next to other high-end phones

Apple iPhone 5s (16GB, Gold) - Excellent review

A respectively fast processor, excellent build quality and a great operating system, but has since been replaced by newer models

Apple iPhone 5s (16GB, Gold) - Excellent review

The camera on the 5S is the best iPhone one yet, but it falls short of receiving our recommendation award. Yes, you can take great pictures, but it's still frustrating that Apple haven't allowed more manual controls over shooting.

Apple iPhone 5s (16GB, Gold) - Excellent review

Having used the phone for a few months now I have to admit that buying the iPhone 5S was a gamble at first (after all it is expensive), but one that I am glad to have done. There are a few niggles that still grate me such as the battery life which could be better, but in some ways considering it has...
