Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

After reviewing it, we bought one for our on-the-go video… ‘nuff said

Great stills; video; and audio; ND filter; No record time limit

Touch screen limitations; Battery/card inaccessible if mounted; Narrow field-of-view

Sony ZV-1 review

The Sony ZV-1’s articulating screen really does set it apart from its main rival, the Canon G7 X Mk III. It feels robust, and the fact opening the screen out powers the camera from cold is a neat little time-saving party trick. Footage captured on the vlog-star also looks exactly how we want it to in middling to good light. The included ND filter is a saving grace in sunlight, and the only out-of-bounds environment for video capture is low-low-light. Naturally, with the same guts as the excellent RX-100, the ZV-1 is a stills-star as well as a filmstar, with its images looking rich, and in-focus thanks to its smart eye-tracking. You won’t get the shallow depth of field a DSLR delivers, but for a compact, the ZV-1 is still exceptional. A great camera at a stomachable price, given everything it does.

Great stills, video, and audio; ND filter; No record time limit;

Touch screen limitations; Battery/card inaccessible if mounted; Narrow field-of-view;

Sony ZV-1 review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

Sony's latest camera is nimble, lightweight and powerful. With its advanced processing capabilities, fast auto focus and real-time tracking combined with the impressively clear audio capture and the useful flip-out screen, it really is a great option for vloggers.

180-degree flip-out screen; Video processing is impressive; Fast autofocus and real-time tracking; Great sound recording potential

Battery life could be better; No viewfinder; Battery/SD card door is inconvenient for tripod use; Short zoom range

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

The Sony ZV-1 delivers everything that a vlogger could wish for in a compact camera, and it comes with Sony's excellent AF system. Designed specifically for vloggers but also a capable stills camera; Stabilised 4K video; Vari-angle touchscreen

No viewfinder built-in; The redesigned grip is best for left-handers

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

The Sony ZV-1 is the best compact vlogging camera around, though it's not quite perfect, and some of the key differences might incline you to save up a little more for a Sony RX100-series camera instead.

Fantastic image quality from sensor; Fantastic image quality from lens; Best-in-class autofocus performance; Numerous features perfectly suited for vlogging; Ultra-portable; Good battery life; for its size; Affordable compared to similar alternatives

Limited zoom range compared to RX100 VII; No Electronic Viewfinder (EVF); Active SteadyShot crops image and introduces more rolling shutter; Touchscreen not as functional as it could be

Review de la Sony ZV-1, la cámara para vloggers

Fácil de usar con el modo automático; Vídeo nítido y de gran calidad; Compacta y pequeña;

Estabilización de vídeo pobre; Funcionalidades fotográficas limitadas; Autonomía de batería a mejorar;

Sony ZV-1 review

The Sony ZV-1 is the best compact vlogging camera you can buy. Its mix of a bright lens, superb autofocus and design tweaks like the side-flipping screen make it a powerful pocket video option with few peers. Those seeking super-smooth walking footage might find its image stabilization a slight let-down, and it has a few familiar usability quirks, but the ZV-1 remains the best video all-rounder in its weight class.

Class-leading autofocus; Bright lens for lovely video bokeh; Hotshoe and 3.5mm mic port; Side-flipping screen ideal for video; Fits in your pocket

Average video stabilization; Touchscreen still very limited; Micro USB rather than USB-C

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

The ZV-1 is Sony’s first RX100-series camera designed specifically for vlogging. It does that job well thanks to a lightweight body, built-in high-quality microphone, flip-out display, best-in-class autofocus and excellent image quality.

Small and lightweight; Fast autofocus with reliable face/eye tracking; Built-in high-quality microphone; Fully articulating screen; Good video quality

Lens needs to be wider; No headphone port; Limited touch screen functions
