Sonos Move 2 review: Power, performance and portability

The Sonos Move 2 is all about refinements, and those refinements add up to some big improvements over the original Move. The adjustments to its design make it more intuitive to use, whilst also bringing some extra features, and the upgrades to the acoustic architecture make for a better sounding speaker overall. The Move 2 isn't as portable as the Roam, but it is more powerful with better sound performance. On the flip side, it's not as capable as the Era 300 in terms of sound performance, but it is more versatile, whilst still offering many of the same features, like USB-C line-in and Bluetooth.

Great design refinements; Excellent performance overall; Superb battery life;

No Google Assistant; Price increase over Move;

Sonos Move 2 Review

We gave the original $399 Sonos Move high marks for pairing the company's Wi-Fi-based streaming experience with an outdoor-friendly, Bluetooth-capable design. The $449 Move 2 costs more and drops Google Assistant support, but dual tweeters give it the advantage of stereo sound, and it lasts more than twice as long as the original on battery. Beyond this, this smart speaker benefits from hands-free Alexa and Sonos Voice Control, as well as the intuitive Sonos app, which smoothly handles everything from multiroom setup to music streaming. Thanks to its robust stereo audio and longer battery life, the Move 2 is an easy recommendation for Sonos users who want to listen both indoors and out. For inside-only listeners, however, the Sonos Era 300 offers more power and Dolby Atmos support for the same price, earning it our Editors' Choice award.A Familiar Design With Upgraded Tweeters Available in matte black, olive (green), or white, the 6.6-pound Move 2 measures 9.5 by 6.3 by 5.0 inches...

The Move 2 improves upon with predecessor with stereo audio and longer battery life, making it the best Sonos speaker for listening to music outside.

Powerful audio output with rich bass and bright highs; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi streaming; Excellent Sonos app; Hands-free Alexa and Sonos Voice Control; Improved battery life

Not fully waterproof; Outdated Bluetooth specs; Expensive

Sonos Move review: Should you buy it over Roam?

There are other great portable Bluetooth speakers out there - including Sonos' own Roam that is far smaller and better designed for constant portability - but there are none quite like the Sonos Move in terms of sound output and features, especially not for those already invested in the Sonos system. It's the Bluetooth speaker Sonos fans were waiting for.

Excellent sound quality; Durable and water-resistant design; Bluetooth capabilities; AirPlay 2; Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support; Stereo pairing;

Heavy and therefore not all that portable; Quite expensive; No voice control in Bluetooth mode; Can't use two Sonos Move speakers as surrounds;

Sonos Move - Black MOVE1AU1BLK review

We took a Sonos speaker on its first trip outside the house and off of Wi-Fi.

Outstanding sound with strong base and a sound signature that auto-tunes itself depending on where you place it. Splash resistant (IP56). Works with any existing Sonos setup. Microphones for barking at Google or Alexa voice assistants. Drop resistant. Bluetooth compatible.

Cannot use the Sonos app while in Bluetooth mode. No advanced Bluetooth features (can only connect to one device at a time via Bluetooth). Not submersible in water, and touch controls tend to go haywire when wet. Expensive.

Sonos Move Review

Sonos is best known for popularizing multi-room audio, and until now, none of those "rooms" have included your back patio. The Sonos Move shifts this paradigm. At $399, the Move is far from cheap, but it delivers powerful audio in a battery-powered, outdoor-friendly design. It's quite large for a portable speaker, but its size allows it to deliver some serious bass depth. Its sculpted, bass-forward sound signature may not appeal to audio purists, but there's no denying the Move's power, quality, and thoughtful design. It's a step in a new direction for Sonos, and we think it's the right one.Design Measuring 9.5 by 6.3 by 5.0 inches (HWD), the slightly rounded Move has an eggshell-like finish in black or white. Its IP56 rating means it can handle limited dust exposure, as well as water projected from any direction, though it shouldn't be submerged. In other words, poolside splashes or rain won't harm the speaker, and it can get a little dirty, too. It's also built to withstand inte...

The Sonos Move is a powerful multi-room smart speaker with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, as well as a durable, battery-powered design you can use anywhere.

Powerful audio with rich bass depth and bright highs; Portable, dust- and water-resistant build; Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control

Expensive; Heavy; Sculpted, mono sound signature not for everyone

Sonos Move - Black MOVE1AU1BLK review
