The Lumix S1 and S1R are Panasonic's latest digital cameras , and they're a bit of a departure from the cameras the company has made in the past. These new Lumix models are Panasonic's first full-frame mirrorless cameras - meaning, in layman's terms, that the cameras have larger image sensors...

An extremely capable full-frame mirrorless camera – if you're a pro who likes larger bodies, dual card slots and features like 6K Photo, then the S1R is a strong alternative to high-res rivals from Nikon and Sony. Its lens collection is far from fully developed, though, and anyone looking for a small and light mirrorless camera should look elsewhere.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R is an impressively well-built full-frame mirrorless camera with lots of resolution, well thought-out controls and ergonomics and competitive video quality. Unfortunately its burst shooting speeds are simply outdone by the competition and for less money, and it falls slightly behind in overall image quality and autofocus performance as well. But the fact remains that the S1R is enjoyable to use and is worth a look for those that want a well-rounded high-resolution professional camera.

Landscape, studio and event photographers, those with larger hands that prefer a larger grip and camera, outdoor photographers who need especially solid build quality.;

Travel photography and family photographers for whom the S1R's size and weight will be a burden, sports photographers who will need more speed and better autofocus, and dedicated video shooters.;

The S1R is particularly suitable for portrait and landscape photographers as well as pro photographers who shoot weddings, fashion and commercial products, particularly where high-resolution images are needed for making poster-sized enlargements.

Panasonics' Lumix S1R is amazing, but few photographers will need its killer feature.

And the cost is a concern. The $3,700 asking price is more than the Nikon ($3,400) or Sony ($3,200) alternatives. A paucity of affordable lenses compounds matters, though that's sure to be addressed as Sigma has announced plans to release some lower-cost lenses in L-mount.
