Panasonic Lumix S1R review

Panasonic's officially launched its new full-frame mirrorless camera, the Lumix S1R. We got to spend some time with a pre-production sample of the S1R at its official launch in Barcelona.

Superb EVF - best on the market; Very effective image stabilisation; 187MP High Resolution mode is unique; Highly responsive in use

Somewhat large for a mirrorless camera; Power control in awkward position; Stiff menu pad control; V-Log set to be optional paid-for update

Panasonic Lumix S1R Review

Panasonics' Lumix S1R is amazing, but few photographers will need its killer feature.

Excellent image quality; Robust design and build quality; Best available electronic viewfinder; Good subject detection autofocus; 187MP high resolution mode

Gargantuan; Intermittent autofocus errors; Not as valuable as standard S1

Panasonic Lumix S1R review

: The Panasonic Lumix S1R is at least as good as its competitors – but there's plenty of competition

Superb image quality; Pro level controls and build; SD and XQD memory card slots

One of the larger mirrorless cameras on the market; Weak battery life; More expensive than similar cameras

Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R

The S1R is particularly suitable for portrait and landscape photographers as well as pro photographers who shoot weddings, fashion and commercial products, particularly where high-resolution images are needed for making poster-sized enlargements.

Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R

And the cost is a concern. The $3,700 asking price is more than the Nikon ($3,400) or Sony ($3,200) alternatives. A paucity of affordable lenses compounds matters, though that's sure to be addressed as Sigma has announced plans to release some lower-cost lenses in L-mount.

Excellent 47MP full-frame sensor; 5-axis sensor stabilization; Big, sharp EVF; Good control system; Backlit control buttons; Protected from dust and splashes; Top information LCD; 4K video at up to 60fps

More expensive than competitors; Obnoxiously heavy; Contrast focus limits tracking speed and burst rate; Limited lens selection

Hands-on with the Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R

The Lumix S1 and S1R are Panasonic's latest digital cameras , and they're a bit of a departure from the cameras the company has made in the past. These new Lumix models are Panasonic's first full-frame mirrorless cameras - meaning, in layman's terms, that the cameras have larger image sensors...

The Panasonic Lumix S1R is the highest-resolution full frame mirrorless camera yet to hit the market....

Superb resolution; 4K video at 60/50p; Dual image stabilization; Solid handling; Twin card slots/formats

More expensive than rivals; Limited lens system so far; 360/340-shot battery life; Rivals better for action
