OPPO RENO 5G review

Oppo has delivered a well-rounded and exciting new flagship that doesn't do as you might expect. It has the potential to take on some serious camera phone contenders too.

Fantastic triple camera, Impressive battery life, Great performance

ColorOS is still awkward, No wireless charging, No water resistance

OPPO RENO 5G review

Optical zoom seems to be the new obsession in the smartphone camera market, with the likes of Huawei, Honor, and OnePlus trying to beat one another. But before any of these companies made their move, OPPO was already playing around with periscope-style zoom lenses.

Outstanding battery life, Solid hardware and software performance, Less bloatware, Good cameras (in right zoom levels)

No IP rating, Not available in the US

OPPO RENO 5G review

Over the past few years Oppo made big strides in expanding both its presence to new markets and its portfolio to the higher echelons and the Reno 10x zoom is another step in that direction.

Brilliant design, Excellent AMOLED screen, large and notch-free, Intriguing sharp fin notch, Class-leading battery life, VOOC fast charging, Cutting-edge performance, Overall excellent photo and video quality

OPPO RENO 5G review

While this was launched before the Cricket World Cup it did not arrive with me until the Cricket season was finished. Indeed anyone watching the main courts at Wimbledon would have seen the ‘oppo’ name on the show courts, great advert but how many will have known what the name referred to.

Oppo Reno 5G review: Big Deal

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the Oppo Reno isn’t the 5G connectivity, the pop-up camera or 10-times zoom, it’s how weighty it feels.

The Oppo Reno breaks far more new ground than most flagships do and while it’s not cheap, by the standards of 5G phones, it strikes out as close to a bargain as these things come.

No notch; Improved software; Versatile camera kit;

5G experience is inconsistent; Hefty design; No headphone jack;

...and a worse screen

Great, versatile camera, Speedy performance, Strong battery life

Screen is only good, not great, Big and heavy, Zoom camera struggles in low light

OPPO RENO 5G review

A Huawei P30 Pro with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage will cost you £899, and while Oppo's Reno 10x Zoom can't quite match the P30 on photography, it gets pretty close -- while offering excellent value for money at £700 for the 8GB/256GB model.

Excellent triple camera system with 10x zoom, Clever pop-up front camera, Top-class CPU and GPU performance, Good battery life, Minimal-bezel OLED screen

No IP rating for dust/water resistance, No wireless charging, Relatively bulky and heavy

Oppo Reno 5G review

The Oppo Reno 5G is a great phone, and one of the more affordable first-wave 5G models. We’re just not sure you should buy this instead of the Oppo Reno 10X Zoom, which is largely the same but without 5G. If it was £50 extra SIM-free and you were planning on keeping it for several years before upgrading, it’d be no contest. 5G is the way forwards. But in the UK at least you have to buy the Oppo Reno 5G as part of a 5G contract. They’re expensive for now and, if you have not hit the geographical jackpot, not necessarily all that useful just yet.

Fun, versatile camera; Very good battery life; Plenty of power and storage;

5G isn’t worth the price of admission for everyone yet; Software is not the prettiest;
