At full shift; this lens vignettes badly

Created chiefly for the high-end Nikon D300 and D3, the new 24mm PC (Perspective Control) lens from Nikon can also be used on other Nikon D-SLR cameras, such as the relatively new D60 on which I tested it, albeit with some loss of full automation and functionality.

The PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED is the most specialised lens we have tested to date. When used as a "simple" ultra-wide lens, it is extremely sharp across the frame, with no vignetting or edge softness to speak of, which is great news for landscape photographers.

This is a great lens that I use for portraiture as well as the common "miniaturization" landscapes. Excellent optics, probably the sharpest 24mm I own, and I have the 24-70, 14-24, and 24/1.4. An excellent lens.

Cost; No rotation between shift and tilt

Great lens for shooting architecture and landscapes. Minus is that it cannot be rotated fully on Nikon D7000, otherwise the impression is perfect: it's supersharp, comfortable to use.

Part of Nikon's resurgence during the past year was the announcement in January '08 of three new Perspective Control lenses, a 24mm f/3.5, 45mm and 85mm. The 24mm was the first of the three to ship, (and arguable the most useful for the landscape photographer), and is the subject of this report.

The 24mm PCE on an FX camera is the next best thing to a view camera without the bulk and inconvenience. It works with both FX & DX formats but really is designed for the D3 and D3x. Image control is not quite as versatile as when using a view camera but for most applications, it does a fine job.
