Bargin

I remember when an 8 port hub cost £100. This is silly speed for silly money. Works great with a Netgear gigabit NIC also from ebuyer and onboard abit IC7-MAX3 NIC. Make sure your patch cables are Cat5e or better. Brilliant.

My network consists of an old Pentium II computer as a router. I use this netgear GS105 gigabit switch as a backbone for my entire network and so far it has proved itself worthwhile. The compact device plows through large file transfers accross the network with ease and it has never went down once.

Netgear GS105

The switch does its job. Delivers gigabit speed in a small metal case. The version I received supports jumbo packets, full duplex and auto-uplink. I purchased the GS108 and the GS105 and they both perform well. The switch would be appropriate for business use because of the solid construction.
Pros:
  • Rugged metal construction
  • small profile
  • runs cool for gigabit switch
  • ease of setup
Cons:
  • Some may prefer plastic cases with cables in back

Great Netgear equipment

I bought this switch some time back and have been using it without issue. Connecting a new computer is quick and easy. I was even able to daisy chain a second switch I purchased to add additional ports to a room on the other end of the house. A real nice feature for those in similar situations.
Pros:
  • Easy connection
  • no setup required
  • quiet
Cons:
  • None

This is a very reliable switch which will just do what it is supposed to with no problems.

This is the smallest (in terms of port numbers) Gigabit switch that Netgear make. The first thing that you notice about it when you open the box is that it has an extremely high build quality and has a good weight to it. This sort of thing is always reassuring.

NETGEAR GS105E Briefly Reviewed

Some of the comments in the SNB forums haven't been kind to NETGEAR for their new "ProSafe Plus" switch lineup of one Gigabit and two 10/100 switches. Folks seem to question the wisdom of the 16 and 24 port models being 10/100 only and all three requiring a Windows machine running an application for...
Pros:
  • VLAN support
  • QoS including bandwidth control
Cons:
  • Tied to Windows for administration
  • No port disables or link speed / mode control

excellent little high featured unmanaged switch

If youre a Windows user or have network access to at least one physical Windows box for installing and using the configuration app, which is an Adobe AIR app btw, the extra features make this a no brainer for people that could easily make use of them.
Pros:
  • Switch is small, compact, and has VERY sturdy metal housing
  • By the mass of it alone, feels substantial in my hand compared to another metal-housed but lighter dumb switch like my TRENDnet.
Cons:
  • Front mount ports are a little annoying if youre pairing these with switches with rear-mounted ports since they put the power input jack on the back
  • They could have easily put it on one of the sides with a tight-fitting 90 degree input jack so that it didnt ugly up your desktop.
