It's that time of the year again – Apple's firmly established yearly release cycle means today we assess the iPhone 8 Plus. The current flagship, though due to be usurped by the iPhone X very soon, the 8 Plus boasts a new A11 Bionic chip, a dual-camera set up plus a new glass back.

Unfortunately, with the futuristic, face-reading iPhone X just around the corner, the iPhone 8 feels a little overshadowed.

While it won’t inspire mania among the enthusiast crowd like the iPhone X will, the iPhone 8 remains a solid package for those happy to play things safe.

You'll need to make your own mind up about this one, since it's a refined smartphone but a lacklustre upgrade. Had Apple included a fast charger and maybe some form of wireless charging pad, it would have matched the 8/10 awarded to last year's iPhone 7 Plus.

The iPhone 8 Plus is a hard phone to recommend. Sure, it's powerful, but so is every other flagship - and with a dated design and huge body, the 8 Plus is lagging behind. Throw in the fact that the wireless charging is slow, the fast wired charging costs you extra, and flagship camera feature Portrait Lighting just doesn't work well enough yet, and the 8 Plus is a tough sell. If you're coming from an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus there's not much to justify the upgrade - though moving from a 6 or 6s is more understandable. And if you're currently an Android user, you'll find phones that are just as fast, with modern designs, for far less money in the Android ecosystem. It's just hard to see the argument for spending £799/$799 on a phone this big in 2017, especially with the smaller-bodied iPhone X now in the line up. This one's for big-handed Apple devotees only.

Apple doesn't slide backward, but sometimes it moves forward slowly. The new iPhone 8 ($699 for 64GB; $849 for 256GB) rests a little bit on Apple's laurels. While it's an excellent phone, it doesn't bring any radical new consumer features for owners of the iPhone 7 or even 6s models. Its powerful new A11 processor sets the stage for Apple's augmented reality future, but if you're interested in that, the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are better bets. Before we begin, I'd like to note the score above: 3.5 stars, the lowest we've rated an iPhone in a while. The iPhone 8 has some class-leading features, most notably that A11 processor and a camera that matches other $700 flagships. But on price-performance balance, it's the least appealing member of the iPhone family right now, and for that, we docked it half a star.
