Review: With the iPhone 5S, Apple lays groundwork for a brighter future

Every year since 2008, Apple has released new flagship iPhones in a predictable cadence: on even years we get a new external design; on odd years we get a refinement of the previous year's design with upgraded insides and new hardware features.
Pros:
  • The iPhone 5 design is still sturdy and attractive
  • and "space gray" should hold up better to scuffs than last year's black model
  • Excellent performance
  • Good camera with improved low-light performance
  • though in low light especially some Lumia phones can best it
  • Lovely screen
  • even if some others...
Cons:
  • The fingerprint sensor is imperfect as a standalone authentication tool
  • and Apple doesn't (yet?) support two-factor authentication
  • Dual-band 802.11n and 100Mbps LTE aren't bad at all in the here-and-now
  • but they might be feeling a little dated by the time your two-year contract is up
  • Developers...

Apple iPhone 5s review

During an era that hears terms like "five-inch" and "phablet" being hurled across Android phone reviews and the Oxford English Dictionary respectively, it came as a surprise to some that Apple stuck to its four-inch design for the iPhone 5s.

  • Amazing camera
  • beautiful design and screen quality
  • fingerprint sensor works well
  • powerful processor
  • best app store available
Cons:
  • Many key software features available as free updates for previous models of iPhone
  • premium design and hardware comes at a price

Review: How does Apple's new iPhone 5s perform as a camera?

The iPhone 5s features a very good camera that’s easy to use and delivers strong results with little user intervention. It’s a logical extension of the Apple design philosophy, with evolutionary performance increases and feature extensions. iPhone photographers looking to trade up will find much to like in the 5s, but it’s not likely to lure users who prefer larger screens or are committed to other mobile operating systems.
Pros:
  • Good exposure across a range of situations
  • Good image detail, restrained noise reduction
  • Pleasing color rendition
  • Good flash with notably accurate color
  • Very responsive operation, negligible shutter lag
  • Very fast shot-to-shot time, 10 fps continuous burst
  • Very easy-to-use camera app
  • Panorama mode better than most
  • Fun slow motion video capture
  • Effective HDR mode with very little ghosting
  • Digital video stabilization works relatively well
  • Well-designed gallery (Photos) app
Cons:
  • Less detail in good light than some higher-res sensors
  • Minimal manual control in camera app
  • Photographic ergonomics not the best
  • Finicky focus confirmation can lead to missed focus
  • Smallish screen
  • No optical image stabilization
  • No dedicated, two-stage shutter button
  • Underexposed video in very low-light conditions
  • Filter images only exportable at low resolution
