Apple iPad 2 review

The day we got the iPad 2 delivered for testing was not just a normal day as spookily it happened to coincide with the passing away of its creator Steve Jobs . In some ways this helped us to focus on why the tablet has proven so popular and its not hard to see why, as there is something special...

The original iPad was the best tablet available a year ago. Now, the iPad 2 is the best tablet available, though it really hasn’t diverted from the original formula.

Reading this iPad 2 review, you may have thought to yourself that I’m merely picking up on all the positives, neglecting any real issues with the device. You would be half right. Yes I’ve been waxing lyrical about the iPad 2, but bar a few irrelevancies with the camera and inevitabilities such as...

The second generation iPad is a revision of the original, and it's a shame the screen hasn't been upgraded, but it's still incredibly quick

The device we have here is the WiFi and 3G version from Orange – the black strip at the top of the device shows the 3G functionality and adds an extra 12 grams to the WiFi-only 601 gram weight.

If you can stomach the price difference, better get the iPhone 13 Pro instead. To our mind, $200 extra may be worth it to get the higher iPhone 13 Pro display refresh rate, longer battery life, better main sensor, the ultrawide camera that doubles as a Macro model, and the true 3x optical vs the...

Much improved battery life, Dynamic and jolly photos in more challenging conditions, Easy to view outdoors display with perfect calibration, Snazzy Cinematic video mode, Double the predecessor storage for the same price

Slow display refresh rate for the price point, Wired and wireless charging take comparatively long, Cinematic video mode is finicky without good lighting, Taller notch eats into some video formats, Worse value for money ratio than the iPhone 13 Pro

Successor to the Throne. About one year ago, Apple laid the foundation for the iPad, a groundbreaking new tablet series. Apples iPad 2 comes with new hardware: dual-core CPUs and front and rear cameras.

High quality case, Good performance, Quiet and low heat emissions, Good battery life, Extensive package (Appstore, Bookstore, iTunes...)

Still no cursor keys on the virtual keyboard, Limited connectivity, Camera module has bad quality, The Apple System (both soft- and hardware) are completely closed off

Design Over the past year, most of the complaints about the size or weight of the original iPad were from those coming from e-readers like the Kindle, not another tablet: it wasn't light enough to hold in one hand for long periods of time, but it was much lighter than a netbook or a Windows Tablet...

Much faster in some areas., Thinner and lighter., Huge, intuitive app library., Smart Covers are slick., iMovie and GarageBand are killer apps., Dual cameras add functionality., Still excellent battery life., Tough-to-beat price.

Not night-and-day better for some iPad owners., Cameras are sub-par by Apple standards., Android sometimes more powerful and open., Smart Cover doesn't guard the back., Still the same 1024x768 display.

Apple iPad 2 review

If you already own the original iPad there’s little reason to splurge on the latest. While the cameras bring new functionality, the results as far as the rear camera is concerned, are basic.

More horsepower under the hood, slightly lighter, looks and feels great, battery life is still brilliant.

Rear-facing camera offers basic results.
