Finally getting organized

Overall I like the unit and have no buyer's remorse beyond the remote drive mapping issue. If you are technically inclined, there are ways around the issue, but they are cumbersome and the unit should come with this common NAS functionality.

After years of having multiple external drives that mirror each other, This little beauty lets you put all your stuff in one place and with the RAID 5 you are protected; I found the setup of the unit and mycloud.com very easy.

What TOTALLY detracts from this unit is the lack of availability to map a network drive when you are in a remote situation; Doing some research I found that this was an option before the big upgrade, and MANY complaints on the internet about it.

50% drive failure- Appalling RMA process. Complete data loss

Singularly the worst storage purchase I have ever made. Two out of the four the hard drives have failed and it appears the second during a rebuild of the first. RMA process flawed beyond belief with support staff who do not understand the product and requiring buyer funded international postage to...

Excellent bit of kit

Excellent bit of kit. Set up straight forward. Automatic Firmware update downloaded/installed within minutes of connecting the internet. WD software is excellent (No glitches yet). Running Raid 5 + 1 with 4 x 4TB WD Reds.

Western Digital is not honest.

I purchased one of these three years ago. My office flooded and I lost the power supply. Seemed easy enough. Call WD and get new one. But this company claimed there was no such part. I purchased another whole unit just for the cord. So, I do not recommend Western Digital because they are not honest.

Correct Storage Capacity Details

I ordered this unit and it works well. Be aware that it comes with only 2 x 4Tb drives which technically adds up to 8TB. However to raid this in any capacity reduces this down to 4TB. I bought 2 x additional 4Tb drives and configure a raid 6 which gave me 12Tb and one drive redundancy

WD My Cloud EX4100: A simple, effective and affordable NAS

You can buy the EX4100 pre-filled in capacities ranging from 8TB up to 24TB. However, we'd recommend buying the enclosure and drives separately – you could save nearly £100 when fitting four 4TB drives.

Straightforward to use; Near-silent in operation; Intuitive software

Limited connectivity

Shipped with two 4TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration. As a result you only get 3.98TB of storage. If you want the full 8TB of storage you have to downgrade to a JBOD! I called Western Digital and was advised to buy two more Western Digital Red's to use the RAID 5 or 10.

WD My Cloud EX4100 4-Bay Expert Series 16TB NAS Review

The WD My Cloud EX4100 is a very standard looking black NAS unit. Four front accessible and hot-swappable drive bays, and a USB port with one-press-key copy function. WD also added a two-line display that can provide you with device and setup information.

Pre-configured including hard disk drives; Solid performance; Good features; Dual Gigabit Ethernet; Dual PSU support; USB 3.0 with one-touch copy; LCD Display

no eSATA
