Synology DiskStation DS920+ review

With the DS920+ you get a better processor, GPU, and faster RAM – this makes it an incremental update from the DS918+, but a great choice otherwise for first-time NAS users. Network performance is still fast, but it could have been better with updated LAN ports.

Still easy to set up; Improved performance; Improved transcoding;

Retains 1GbE ports; Limited to 8GB RAM

Great performance and simple upgrade

Bought this to upgrade from my DS415play which I had for 6 years for home use. The upgrade process was very simple just by moving the physical disks over and confirming when prompted at bootup. A massive improvement in response times with the DS920+ even without additional RAM or SSD cache. Makes it much more usable when streaming video or browsing images. If necessary in future I can still expand the RAM, SSD and use the second network port, but I think CPU was the main bottleneck on the DS415play.

Excellent Product

Works perfectly. Only thing to note is that you need two SSD cards if you want to improve read/write... One for read and one for write. I'm pretty sure it speeds up logging into the NAS interface too.

I'm getting upload speeds I haven't seen since dial-up internet, despite having prioritised traffic to the NAS in my router and reading everything I can find online about improving performance and using that to tweak the settings. It seems like many customers of Synology have this problem, and there are few solutions available. Even in Synology's own forums, the company is pretty silent on this. :/ I am currently trying to upload a folder of videos, which is 156 GB. I can understand it taking more than 1 GB/s, given that is the max speed of the connection and the NAS has to d...view more
