Super Mario Odyssey review: Nintendo nails it

We've been reviewing games for a very long time, since the late 80s, and there are only a handful that can boast as much talent as Mario's latest caper.

A masterpiece in game design; Tonnes to do and collect; Puzzles and variety a-plenty; Genius use of the new Cappy gameplay mechanic; The standout game for the Nintendo Switch

Er; That you'll have no time to tend to anything else in your life because Mario is so darn near-perfect

Variety; Controls; Collecting Feels Fun

Some Kingdoms Feel Better Than Others; Some Motion Controls Don't Always Work

Super Mario Odyssey Review – A New Era

Comparing Super Mario Odyssey to over thirty years' worth of Mario games is difficult, because it's impossible to remove the affects of nostalgia from a series that started my love of video games in the first place.

Outstanding balance between action and exploration; Never stops surprising; Huge amount of fan service; Looks and sounds fantastic; Excellent boss battles; Cappy

Some hidden "secrets" spoil surprises that happen late in the game; Tags

Super Mario Odyssey Review

With the Nintendo Switch riding high on the success and popularity of games like Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2, and with the way that developers are starting to flock to the platform, all it's missing is one more big hit to put the icing on the (wedding) cake.

Cappy adds a lot to Mario's skillset; Exploring each new freeform open world kingdom; Capturing other beings and objects adds huge variety; So many wonderful homages; Photo mode is a lot of fun

Peach is the helpless damsel once again; Some kingdoms look odd for a Mario game; Controls can be fiddly and complex for precision platforming; though Assist Mode and co-op will help beginners

Super Mario Odyssey Review

Super Mario Odyssey isn't just the best platformer to come around in years, it's also one of the most essential releases of the year. Period. A showcase for Nintendo's development talent and Mario as an iconic character that can still deliver surprising and transformative experiences even after all...

"Magnificent"

What a game. Even after you've completed the story there's still so much to do afterwards and it isn't tedious at all: they're new and refreshing events! The only downside I have with the game is that my wife played it and now she won't give it back :) I miss my Switch.

"A return to form." "A reinvention." There are lots of clichés we fall back on when describing a fresh game in a long-running series. The truth is, Nintendo has constantly reinvented the idea of a 3D Mario game, relentlessly pushing the franchise forward with each release.

Super Mario Odyssey honors much of what makes other 3D Mario games great, plus it adds plenty of its own flavor to the Mario stew thanks to its capture mechanic. Mario Odyssey can keep you busy for hours and hours if you want it to, and you probably will.

Great game

Great addition to the Mario Bros franchise. Harkens back to the older days while still bringing a fresh new take, both my step-son and I love to play it together!!
