Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

The SteelSeries Apex Pro, with its custom actuation and comfy magnetic switches, is one of the best gaming keyboards on the market. And, when you add the svelte aesthetic and slick OLED display, it's easy to recommend to anyone.

Beautiful aluminum build; Custom actuation settings; Quiet

Expensive

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

When SteelSeries first talked about the Apex Pro to the media, and indeed the entire Apex series of keyboards, they did so via a cryptic message with the tagline "Experience the next big innovation from the makers of the original mechanical gaming keyboard".

Good implementation of the Hall effect for actuation point control; Integrated OLED display for real-time notifications and customization; Very powerful software driver with a lot of third-party app support; Full programmability allows for the use of different OS/typing/language layouts; Per-key...

Very expensive relative to the average mechanical keyboard; Software driver needs to be more unified in all the features it offers; OmniPoint switches are only in the alphanumeric section; Stock keycaps are mediocre at best and will wear out sooner rather than later

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

Well we have a another successful innovation from Steelseries! Simply put, this keyboard is amazing! The switches have a smooth and linear fell to them. Whats even better you can point to any distance along that linear travel to activate the switch, which is quite amazing.

Innovation; Key press feedback is spot on; Any actuation point you want; Durable material; Lighting is awesome; Included wrist rest; OLED display

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

Just like with past keyboards we ended up using the Apex Pro for a total of two weeks with games like Borderlands 3, Terminator Resistance (quite good for a low budget title) and The Outer Worlds.

Excellent Build Quality (Series 5000 Aerospace Aluminum Frame); OmniPoint Mechanical Magnetic Switches (Adjustable Actuation Point / 100 Million Keystrokes); OLED Display; Full RGB Individual Key Illumination (16.7m Colors / 11 Effects); Dedicated Media Keys; Fully Programmable Keys; NKey Rollover...

Price (For Some); Number Of OmniPoint Switches (61/104); Small OLED Display

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

The SteelSeries Apex Pro is a beautifully RGBed keyboard with an amazing level of customization, including per-key actuation that will change how you game. But tactile typing fans will want more from the linear switches.

Adjustable per-key actuation points for most keys; Brilliant per-key RGB lighting; 5 on-board profiles with RGB and actuation settings; Aluminum build; USB passthrough and some cable management

Questionable long-term typing experience; Expensive

SteelSeries Apex Pro Review

One of the finest gaming keyboards available right now offering excellent build quality, endless customisation options and some innovative new ideas.

Keys are absurdly responsive and ripe for customisation ; OLED smart display is compelling and well executed ; Robust and stylish build quality ; RGB lighting is subtle and explosive in equal measure;

Making the most of its customisation features requires investment ; Lacks dual-function keys ;

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

The Apex 7 and Apex Pro are both well thought out, properly engineered and worthy of the SteelSeries name, but the pricetag, particularly on the Apex 7, does make things a little trickier.

Omnipoint Mechanical Switches are awesome (Apex Pro only), Attractive RGB illumination, Magnetic wrist rest included, Incredibly sturdy frame, Available as tenkeyless Neutral +- OLED screen is fun but the use cases are limited

Expensive, QX2 Red switches are noisy and lack any feel whatsoever (Apex 7 only), Impossible to see the OLED screen most of the time, No macro keys

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

SteelSeries requires no introduction in the gaming arena. Since their incorporation in 2001 SteelSeries have...

Custom Actuation keys, OLED Display, Faux-Rubber wrist rest, USB 2.0 Pass Through

Price, RGB Effects

Steelseries Apex Pro Gaming Keyboard (US) APEX PRO review

This review is based on a SteelSeries Apex Pro provided by SteelSeries. It is available in retail and digital stores now, for $199.99.

Sturdy design, as expected, Adjustable actuation is the big sell, SteelSeries Engine 3 software is easy to use, USB port on the keyboard can be handy

The only selling point is adjustable actuation, Price will scare away some buyers
