Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Review

Costing around £1500 the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is one of the most expensive 85mm lenses on the market, but it’s also one of the best. On the evidence of using it on the 42-million-pixel A7R II, I see no reason why it won’t meet the demands of even higher resolution sensors that may come on the...

Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM Review (Review Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM)

The Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM is an absolutely phenomenal short telephoto lens, ideal for portraiture. It blurs backgrounds with aplomb and delivers exceedingly sharp results.
Pros:
  • Impressively sharp from edge to edge at f/1.4., No distortion., Dust and splash resistant., Physical aperture ring., Focus hold function., Very bright design.
Cons:
  • Dimmed corners at f/1.4., Omits optical stabilization., Expensive.

Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM Lens - Brand New review

The Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM is an outstanding wide-angle prime lens with a very fast maximum aperture, although the high asking price is certainly reflective of the performance and image quality on offer.

Sony FE 85mm f1.4 GM review

Sony's FE 85mm f1.4 GM is a high-end prime lens for its mirrorless cameras. The short telephoto focal length and bright f1.4 focal ratio make it ideal for portraits and the de-clickable aperture ring also makes it great for video work.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM SEL85F14GM

Representing a new level in Sony's mirrorless lens family, the Sony 85mm ƒ/1.4 GM is a top-notch portrait prime. Sony claims the new FE-mount 85mm ƒ/1.4 G Master lens is the "ultimate portrait lens," and after our testing they just might be right.

Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM

If only the Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM cost about $700-$900 our summary would be very positive indeed, with many oohing and aahing over its performance. Unfortunately you have to pay as much as $1800 for the tested lens, the same amount of money as you have to spend for the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/85 which is...
Pros:
  • solid and weather-resistant casing,, sensational image quality in the frame centre,, good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, imperceptible lateral chromatic aberration,, moderate distortion,, slight astigmatism,, low vignetting on the APS-C sensor,, very nice out-of-focus areas,, quite...
Cons:
  • noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration,, too high coma,, significant vignetting on full frame,, work against bright light should have been better.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM SEL85F14GM

I had really high hopes for this, since Sony marketing claimed this was probably one of the best lenses ever made. Thing is: it isn't. Sharpness is good in the center, but wide open it just lacks the last bit of sharpness one would expect. Same goes for Bokeh. It's nice. Really nice to be honest.
Pros:
  • good sharpness
  • nice bokeh
Cons:
  • big
  • expansive
  • slow focus
  • unusable in video
  • marketing
