Glad I made the switch!

As a professional photographer for 40 years I depend on my equipment to perform, switching from a Nikon D850 to the A7RIII was a big move! After just 1 week I'm already impressed and racing ahead with the features.

First Impressions

I opted for the a7Riii over the a7iii after evaluating both-mainly for the 42mp sensor. The grip could be bigger with more space for fingers. I also bought the battery grip which resolves that issue. I bought three Sony lenses at the same time and will comment on those as I gain more experience.

Sony a7R Mk III review: The strongest case yet for ditching your DSLR

A great camera with a few flaws that has really taken it up to the big boys in the top end full-frame DSLR market. Has every right to be considered a major contender by anybody looking to move into high end hardware. Will convert some pro photographers to mirrorless full-frame but I suspect not all.
Pros:
  • Image quality
  • image quality
  • image quality – fabulous
  • Flexibility – will suit wedding
  • events
  • street and landscape photographers in particular
  • Impressive autofocus performance
  • Much improved battery life
  • A market leader in full-frame
  • interchangeable lens
  • mirrorless cameras
  • Great viewfinder –...
Cons:
  • Too complicated – the menus
  • in particular
  • are very difficult to work out
  • Very expensive – and as such asks a big question
  • Very slow in clearing image buffer
  • The grip could be a little wider (particularly if hefting a large telephoto lens around
  • UHS-II cards supported in only one of the two SD...

Sony a7R III

The a7R III doesn't offer increased resolution when compared with its predecessor, but that doesn't mean it's not a serious upgrade. It takes a sensor that's already proven to deliver excellent performance and ekes a bit more dyanmic range out of it, while other upgrades are more palpable.
Pros:
  • Proven 42MP full-frame sensor
  • Improved processor and autofocus system
  • 10fps image capture with tracking
  • Silent shooting option
  • Tilting touch LCD
  • Dual card slots
  • Larger battery than a7R II
Cons:
  • Only one card slot supports UHS-II speeds
  • No built-in flash
  • Can't start video until image buffer is cleared
  • Dense menu system

Sony α7R III Model: ILCE7RM3B

The α7R III was recently announced as the winner of this year's Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) award for the Best Professional High Resolution Mirrorless camera so it should be no surprise that we've nominated it for an Editor's Choice award.

Sony Alpha A7R III review: Mirrorless, but certainly not pointless

The Sony Alpha A7R III is easily one of the best cameras you can buy at the moment. I think we are slowly coming to a point where professional cameras don't need to be traditional full frame DSLRs. The time of the mirrorless camera has truly come and the Sony Alpha A7R III is the proof.
