Sony A6500 review

The A6500 is Sony's latest flagship APS-C E-mount compact system camera and is essentially an enhanced version of the A6300 that provides a number of performance and handling upgrades for those with deeper pockets.

Fantastic image quality; Extended memory buffer; Powerful 5-axis in-body stabilisation; Highly customisable

No in-camera raw processing; Memory card access can be fiddly; Focus Area options could be more streamlined

Sony A6500

The Sony A6500 replaces the 8-month-old A6300 as Sony's premium APS-C Alpha offering. The A6500 retains a similar outward appearance to its predecessor, featuring full weather sealing against dust and moisture ingress, but now has in-body 5-axis stabilization, a touch-enabled LCD screen, a bigger...

It weighs just 453g when the battery and card are inserted, yet crams in a DSLR-sized APS-C sensor. This is able to capture an extraordinary amount of detail with its maximum resolution of 24.2MP.

Sony A6500 Lab Review: How Does This Flagship Mirrorless Camera from Sony Stack Up?

The Sony A6500 is the flagship model for Sony's APS-C sensor-based mirrorless camera line and features an E-lens mount. The Sony A6500 was brought out only 8 months after the forerunner A6300 was shipped, which begs the question as to what changes and differences would justify a new model so soon.

Sony announced its new flagship APS-C camera, the a6500, a week ago and we had the chance to see a pre-production version at the Sony Europe headquarters in Weybridge. We couldn't bring back pictures or video footage but spending a few hours with the new camera gave us an idea about its new features...

Fantastic small camera!

Overall, this is a great camera body. It's my fourth Sony APS-C Mirrorless body (NEX-5N, NEX-6, A6000, A6500) and I'm really enjoying it. The body is very solid, and the performance is excellent. It's very fast, and I was able to configure it to do what I needed more easily than the previous models.

Focus speed and large buffer Better controls than previous APS-C Sony Great build-quality Great EVF (especially at 120Hz) Nice grip and overall size Can use it while connected to a USB battery pack

Mediocre battery life (but works with a battery pack) Could use another dial (but it works once you get used to it) Not quite as hip looking as Fuji or Olympus..; :

Sony A6500

by Mike Tomkins | Posted: 06/07/2017 When Sony first told us of the A6500 late last year, we must admit we felt a mixture of surprise and bewilderment. Following very closely in the footsteps of the A6300, the Sony A6500 was in many respects extremely similar to that camera -- much more so than we'd...

Comfortable, premium body with good controls; Touch-screen for subject selection; Hybrid image stabilization system; Excellent image quality; Better high ISO JPEGs than the A6300; Extremely fast 11.1 fps burst capture; Very deep buffers for raw and JPEG alike; 4K video capture with no pixel binning

Pricey for an APS-C camera; JPEG colors aren't the most accurate; Very slow buffer clearing; Laggy touch-pad AF function; Poorly-placed movie button; No headphone jack; Mediocre battery life

Sony A6500 Review

The Sony A6500 is a mid-range, prosumer mirrorless camera. It follows an established line of products that go back to the NEX-6 model when Sony separated the Alpha branding for A-mount SLT cameras from its E-mount mirrorless cameras.

Sony A6500 review: A mini mirrorless powerhouse

The Sony A6500 is the company's 2017 flagship mirrorless camera with a crop sensor, sitting below the Sony A7 full-frame line-up. The A6500 joins an already bustling series across the wider A6000 range, with several cameras at different specifications available at different price points.

A tough and tiny powerhouse of a camera; 5-axis in-body image stabilisation means you don't rely on Sony's OSS lenses; autofocus is very fast in all shooting scenarios; video performance and image quality is second to none

Poor battery life; battery charger not included; touchscreen operation could be improved; relatively limited Sony E lens line up
