Sonos Sub (Gen3) - White SUBG3AU1 review

When you're looking for better sound from your flat panel television, sound bars offer a seductive solution: subtle, sexy, self-contained speakers that promise to bring out the best in your favorite movies and TV shows. But for most soundbars, the promise of "surround sound" is an empty one.

SONOS platform is ideal for music lovers; Discrete 5.1 surround from compatible sources; Elegant looks; Wireless operation; A model of simplicity

Expensive; Single optical input; No DTS decoding; Limited by TVs in getting discrete 5.1 sound

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

The Sonos One is the best-sounding Alexa speaker yet, and its integration with Amazon’s assistant is excellent (if not yet complete).

Excellent audio quality; Comprehensive Sonos app; Lets you control lots of music sources; Can pair more speakers for whole-house audio

Can’t be used to output TV audio; Can’t initiate some streaming audio using Alexa

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

Sonos One: Sonos’ compact multi-room speaker meets Amazon’s Alexa, and they’re set to be best friends

Great sound quality, Apple Airplay 2 support, Amazon Alexa support; Google Assistant coming in 2018

Won't pair with Play:1; No speaker mount options

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

Smart speakers are big business now, and with Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home dominating the market, Sonos had a choice: step up or slip behind. The Sonos One shows the connected speaker stalwart chose to play the game, and not just with one virtual assistant but as many as it can.

Fits smoothly into an existing Sonos system; Assistant-agnostic means you won't be locked in; Sound quality belies the size and price; Controlling whole-home music by voice is transformational; All the usual Alexa skills

Some configuration stumbles; An Echo Dot is cheaper

Sonos Sub (Gen3) - White SUBG3AU1 review

The Sonos Sub, an expensive wireless subwoofer that's easy to adjust via app, isn't how you start a Sonos system, but it's a terrific addition to complete one.

Powerful, thunderous bass at highest levels; Subtle low-frequency anchoring at more modest volumes; User-controllable bass levels; Attractive design; Can sit vertically or be laid flat; Easy integration into existing Sonos systems.

Expensive; Large; Only works with Sonos speakers, cannot be physically connected to a subwoofer output.

Sonos Sub (Gen3) - White SUBG3AU1 review

Paired with a Sonos Play speaker this Sub sounds great and makes plenty of sense

Versatile placement; Simple set-up; Integrates well

A little expensive; Not the punchiest

Sonos Sub (Gen3) - White SUBG3AU1 review

“Sonos finds some missing oomph with its Sub wireless subwoofer, a potent box of boom to round out the bottom of end of your Sonos system, no wires needed.”

Powerful; potent bass for such a small sub; Excellent extension and impact; Force cancelling design eliminates unwanted vibrations; Solid; inert design; Easy to set up and use

Bass a little too thumpy at times, No standard line inputs, i.e; only compatible with Sonos gear

Sonos One (Gen 2) Review

While Amazon's Alexa was once available only on Echo devices and Google Assistant was limited to certain Android phones, the popular voice assistants are popping up everywhere now. The Sonos One is one such device where you'll find both. The $199 wireless smart speaker is effectively the same as the $149 Sonos Play:1, with the added benefit of a microphone array that lets you use it with a voice assistant. It's head and shoulders above other smart speakers in this price range, like the Amazon Echo and the Google Home, and earns our Editors' Choice for its performance and versatility. Sones One Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 Sonos recently updated the One with a faster processor and more memory, as well as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support. BLE is only used as an option for setting up the speaker, and Bluetooth audio streaming is not present on this new model, which the company is calling the Sonos One Gen 2. According to Sonos, the new processor and additional memory do not currently represent...

The second-generation Sonos One is a versatile wireless speaker with excellent sound quality, support for multi-room audio, and your choice of Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice control.

Multi-room audio with flexible stereo and surround configurations; Powerful sound for its size; Offers both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice assistants; Supports AirPlay

Sound can distort at top volumes; No Bluetooth or wired audio connections
