Panasonic DP-UB420 review

The Panasonic DP-UB420 isn't going to win any beauty pageants - it has the cosmetic appeal of a biscuit tin, with a level of finish that doesn't inspire confidence - but it could be the best value 4K Blu-ray player on the market.

Outstanding UHD image quality; High-Res Audio file support; Key streaming services supported

Not a great CD player; Basic build quality

Couldn't keep up

I bought this model over the weekend and found on trying to watch a 4k movie through it, that the audio couldn't keep up with the picture. Also it caused this diagram of instructions on how to use the remote to come up in the bottom corner of my screen, spent the better half of my afternoon trying to figure out how get rid of this display, after googling the problem I realized I wasn't the only person with this problem from a Panasonic machine. I ended up taking it back and getting a different brand. Haven't had any problem since. Definitely would not recommend. But I must say the friendly staff at JB HiFi were great when dealing with the return.

Awesome Player, terrible voice control

Awesome player but voice control features are obstructive at best, when working with Google voice control, you have to register an account with Panasonic, then link your device to that account, then manually link this account with Google - which only works on some devices - and then ask Google to link with Panasonic every time you want to use voice features. Every time you want to pause, you ask Google to talk to Panasonic, then it reads a full list of things you can do which takes a full minute, and only then can you issue a command. After which, the player automatically disconnects and you have to do it all again to issue another command. Suuuuper irritating as a feature, but if you're not concerned with smart house networking it's excellent.

Quality Japanese Brand but...

Does all the things I need it to do. The detractor is the remote which is poorly designed and is the one thing which is not easily forgotten. You will accidentally press the netflix button and the menu button too often which exits you from the movie. You then have to go back into the blueray mode and find where you were because it doesn't retain your last viewing time. Not only that but you can tell a poor remote design when you have separate buttons for play and pause.

Budget 4k and 3d

Biggest thing to note with this is it is slow to load and the remote doesn't have an easy way to enable subtitles, apart from that it works as expected. Manufacturers still need to work on making all movies get remembered and have a default language/subtitle option so you don't have to select them every new movie!
