A bit niche

The headline feature is of course the camera - and it's a pretty specialized one at that. Most users will appreciate the increased dynamic range - so you can still see detail in the dark areas of an otherwise bright scene.

Great camera (dynamic range; dramatic scenery; Options to save RAW images; depth info; Brilliant display in bright light; Ergonomic; Nice amount of RAM

Buggy fingerprint reader; Slow processing of images (camera; Display colors washed out in low light; Tinny speaker; No SD card slot; JPEGs not great in low light

The Nokia 9 PureView has some promising ideas, but fails to execute on nearly all of them.

Tons of manual camera settings for advanced photographers; Runs clean Android One; No pre-installed bloatware

Unreliable in-display fingerprint sensor; Super slow image processing; Average battery life

Nokia 9 PureView

The Nokia 9 PureView is ambitious about mobile photography, and commendably packs five rear cameras that combine shots into a single image. But the resulting photos don't quite outclass those in pricier flagships, and the rest of the phone's features are middling, leaving it more a niche device for...

Eye-catching five-camera cluster; Decent photos for sub-flagship price; Exports to RAW DNG

Middling other features; Poor fingerprint scanner; Not a comfortable hold

Nokia 9 PureView review: A flawed, ambitious, endearing flagship

The Nokia 9 PureView feels like a great foundation for the next generation of Nokia devices, but it doesn't feel like a foundation I'm rushing to lean on just yet.

Incredible camera; Slick software

Incredibly slow camera; Iffy battery life

Nokia 9 PureView Review

It's not for everyone, but the limited-edition Nokia 9 will boost creativity with its five cameras.

Camera is fun to use; Good display; Unique; eye-turning design; Strong performance; Clean Android One software with timely updates

Slow image processing; Poor in-display fingerprint sensor; Battery life could be better

Nokia 9 PureView review: the camera gamble that (almost) pays off

HMD Global did not miss out on the Mobile World Congress, unveiling four smartphones and a new member of its feature phone family. The Nokia 9 PureView is undoubtedly the head of the family, especially in terms of photography. Here's our full review of the phone that gambled big on photography.

Hardware is rock solid; Clean Android 9 Pie out of the box

In-display fingerprint sensors still not ready; I expected more from the camera

Nokia 9 PureView

There are many things to like about the Nokia 9 PureView. It has a speedy processor, solid software, and an attractive design. But the PureView is a phone best suited for those who are drawn to its unique camera system. For most people, the slightly pricier Samsung Galaxy S10e is a better option.

Unique camera abilities; Android One guarantees multi-year updates; Attractive design

In-display fingerprint sensor doesn't work well; Subpar battery life; No microSD slot for photography enthusiasts

Nokia 9 PureView Review

Over the past few years, Nokia has built a reputation for its solid lineup of budget phones. This year, the company is competing against the best high-end models on the market with its first flagship, the Nokia 9 PureView ($699). The PureView is a little different than your average flagship in that it's targeted at smartphone photography enthusiasts, with a five-lens rear camera array and the ability to shoot in Raw. And while it doesn't top other flagship camera phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10e, it's one of the few US models with monochrome sensors. It's an intriguing option for hardcore smartphone photography buffs, though the Samsung Galaxy 10e and OnePlus 6T are better overall for everyone else. Design and Durability The Nokia 9 PureView stands out compared with the slew of super-sleek flagships on the market. It has fewer curved edges, and the overall look is boxy, but not in a bad way. It's a gorgeous phone with a unique design language that's sure to draw a crowd of adm...

The Nokia 9 PureView could be the right smartphone for shutterbugs, but there are better options for everyone else.

Unique camera abilities; Android One guarantees multi-year updates; Attractive design

In-display fingerprint sensor doesn't work well; Subpar battery life; No microSD slot for photography enthusiasts

Nokia 9 Pureview Review: 5 cameras, Zeiss lens. Nuff said!

Ever since Microsoft's CEO was replaced by Satya Nadela and their purchase of Nokia's mobile phone business was almost completely dissolved, I have been patiently waiting for Nokia to rise from the ashes and release a real flagship phone with some amazing camera hardware.

- Occasionally amazing 12Mp photos; - DNG support for photos; - Android One is fast & stable; - Qi wireless charging; - Nicely designed blue glass body; - VoLTE and VoWiFi

5 rear cameras are all the same focal length (no multi-camera zoom; 5 rear cameras are merged into one with no user control; 5 rear cameras are extremely slow to process; No headphone jack; Body is extremely slippery; In-screen fingerprint scanner isn't as good as others

HMD Global has a lot riding on the success of the Nokia 9 PureView . As the company's most high-profile launch yet, it's nothing short of Nokia's good name hanging in the balance. The Nokia 9 PureView targets the strengths of HMD Global's competitors - photography - with a five-camera configuration...

Attractive design High-quality materials Excellent display Android One

Glitchy fingerprint reader* Slow camera app* Uneven photo results No 3.5mm headphone jack
