New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo Switch) Review

Disaster has struck the Mushroom Kingdom yet again. Bowser, whose hobbies include doting over his only child, has arrived at Peach's Castle to do what he does best. Indeed, he has captured the princess, plunged the land into chaos, and ruined one moustachioed hero's otherwise lovely day.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch)

If you've played New Super Mario Bros U at all before, there's not a whole lot of reasons to go back. It's still terrific 2D Mario title, and it's aged gracefully, with only the slightest of nips and tucks along the way. Just don't go in expecting anything more than what you got in 2012.

Not New, But Still Super

As the most recent entry in the modernized 2D platforming series, New Super Mario Bros. U provided a wide array of fun, colorful stages for you to run, jump, and explore through.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Review

Mario made a big comeback in 2006, not in a defining new 3D adventure, but in the first original 2D platformer Nintendo had produced since the mid-90s. New Super Mario Bros. for DS (NSMB) brought back the classic side-scrolling, block smashing, coin collecting gameplay, but blended it with a now...

A; The Switch make multiplayer much easier (and cheaper; Toadette and Nabbit help make the game a bit more accessible

You lose the Wii U GamePad's Boost Mode; No fourth regular difficulty character; Peachette power up is a token inclusion

Review: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a bargain package for the 2D platformer enthusiast, but if you played this on the Wii U, then you're not going to see much here that you didn't see before.

Over 160 levels total to play through; Multiplayer is a right laugh; Controls are mostly tight and satisfying

Almost nothing new for Wii U owners; Mid-air spin tweaks are misguided; Art style feels a bit bland

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Ever since the Nintendo Switch came along there has been a deluge of games making their way from the Wii U - a console that never really took off for Nintendo - and arriving on the Switch for another bite of the apple with a new audience, often wrapped up in new packages.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is an impressive package if you skipped the original, offering the best of modern-era 2D Mario, madcap multiplayer and glimpses of the outrageous invention that was to come in Super Mario Odyssey.
