Less than super - New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe review

The biggest issue with New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is that it didn't release in a vacuum. In 2012, New Super Mario Bros. U was a fun, polished, but decidedly generic romp through the Mushroom Kingdom.

Polished central mechanics; Interesting level concepts; Loads of content

Uninteresting presentation; Outdated design; Bizarre issues which prevent the game from feeling "Deluxe

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Review – A Polished Pearl of a Port

Every stage introduces something new. Whether it's a level obstacle, a move, an enemy or an item, there's always something else being grafted into the mix to keep you on your toes. My first playthrough had me skipping a couple of worlds with a shortcut, which I loved.

Tons of content to play through; Clever level design; All the characters feel distinct

Music never hooked me; Graphics are a mixed bag; Little incentive for double dipping

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe review – Mario by numbers

Nintendo's first Switch release of the year is another Wii U port, but does this Super Mario Bros. game really deserve the deluxe treatment

Typically excellent controls and, while formulaic, some of the best 2D platform design of recent years; Co-op mode is fun and there's plenty of content and modes

Early levels are too reliant on nostalgia and rehashing previous games; Bland graphics and presentation and very few notable new ideas, especially in terms of stage themes and power-ups

Skitkul retro game that gives parents the opportunity to show their old game talents. Fun to play 4 pers at the same time.

New Super Mario Bros. U is the second-best 2D Mario game. New Super Luigi U is an incredible showcase of inventive level design. They came out six and five years ago, respectively, though today you can play them on a public toilet.

It's Mario; So, almost everything

Coincidentally, whatever was happening on the screen in the five seconds prior to every time I died; And the Ghost Houses

New Super Mario Bros U: Deluxe Edition

The latest addition to the Switch's ever-growing library of software ported and enhanced from the Wii U doesn't offer the biggest set of improvements, but it does deliver the most complete way to play one of Mario's most overlooked adventures.

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe Review – Simple Fun

When it became clear that Nintendo were going to port most first-party Wii U games to the Switch, I was certain we'd see New Super Mario Bros U early on. As more and more time went on, I was fairly certain Nintendo had decided not to bring the game over, and I was hopeful that they were working on a...
