QuickView: NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8 Port Gigabit Desktop Switch
Since the GS108 is an unmanaged switch, there's not much more to say about it, so I'll cut right to the testing. I tested using two systems running WinXP SP2 - one an Athlon 64 3000+ w/ 512 MB, the other a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 w/ 504 MB.
Pros:
- ? Gigabit Ethernet with Jumbo Frame support for not a lot of
Cons:
- ? Hard to tell if you're buying Jumbo Frame capable product

NETGEAR GS108PE, or a smart eight port gigabit ethernet switch with PoE
What if it's too expensive to buy a manageable switch but it's still necessary to separate telephony from other traffic in a small office? Usually it's typical to use smart switches that allow gaining control over the network with only a slight increase in the price of equipment.
Pros:
- Management simplicity
- The presence of a cable tester
- Protection against loops and broadcast storms
- Traffic QoS support
- Virtual networks support
- Moderate size
- Protection against simple DoS-attacks
- Affordable price
- Lifetime warranty from the vendor
Cons:
- The impossibility of connecting four PoE clients with maximum power consumption simultaneously
- The absence of the Russian language in the interface of the management utility
- The impossibility of turning the switch port on or off
- setting its speed and duplex manually and to disable protection

Cheap Power Adaptor, Expensive to Replace
Although the switch itself has a "lifetime" warranty, the power adapter is only warrantied for two years. Our failed after about 2.5 years, and Netgear charges $27.00 for a replacement with is closed to 30% of the cost of the switch.

Compact and effective
I needed this small switch to install inside a wall mounted enclosure. It fit perfectly and has enough switch fabric to handle the throughput necessary for my project. Great little switch.

Item Failed
This switch was fantastic until it bit the dust. I used it in a software testing lab environment without any problems until one day all the lights were blinking (one second on and one second off).
Pros:
- Worked great for 9 months

- Stopped working after 9 months

It just works
I would happily recommend this product. The only thing that I could think to improve on it is to make the power connector have a threaded collar so that the power can't get pulled accidentally.
Pros:
- Not much to write, it's a network switch and it functions as expected
- What's new/different about this switch from a few similar Netgear switches that I've used over the years is that there is a power switch on the unit.
Cons:
- Over the years I've used a number of these little blue network switches from Netgear in various speeds
- They've all been rock solid except for one detail
- I've had more than one power supply fail.

This is the best Gigabit switch on the market
This is, for any money, the best compact gigabit switch on the market, it is completely quiet (passively cooled) and supports jumbo frames.

NETGEAR 8 Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Compact Switch
This arrived a day earlier than I expected. I installed it in my expanding home network and it worked without my having to do more. The product is solid due to its external metal housing is mounted on on a well ventilated wall with the supplied screws.
