Huawei Fit review: A stylish design isn't enough

The Huawei Fit is like so many other wearables on the market. It's a good device on paper, but ultimately fails to dethrone Fitbit, Garmin and Samsung.

The Huawei Fit is a capable fitness smartwatch, but the software falls short of the competition.

The Huawei Fit is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and has week-long battery life. It can track daily activities, including heart rate, and can show notifications from your phone. It can be worn in the shower and while swimming.

The display is dull and touchscreen is difficult to operate when working out. There's no GPS or automatic exercise detection. The Huawei app lacks any sort of social features.

Huawei Fit Preview

The $129.99 Fit is Huawei's answer to the Fitbit Charge 2 ($149.95 at Fitbit)(Opens in a new window) . It's right there in the name, and in the similar price. The features are nearly the same, too. Both fitness trackers feature monochrome touch screens, built-in heart rate sensors, deliver push notifications, and automatically track daily activity. The Huawei Fit has a few potential advantages, including an always-on display and a unique training program in its accompanying app. I put the tracker through its paces for a few days and it seems promising, but I'm waiting on final software to tell which is the superior option. Look, Feel, and DisplayI like that wearing the Huawei Fit feels like wearing nothing at all. With an aluminum case that measures 1.5-inch wide, 0.4-inch thick, and only 1.1 ounces, it's quite lightweight. There's a heart rate sensor and charging pins on the bottom, and no buttons on either side—control happens exclusively through the touch screen. The Charge 2,...

The Huawei Fit is a watch-like fitness tracker with an always-on display that tracks calories, distance, heart rate, sleep, steps, and can help you train for a race.

Always-on display; Built-in heart rate sensor; Waterproof; Pushes notifications; Tracks daily activity, calories, distance, and sleep; Helps plan training; Lightweight

Touch display can accidentally start workouts; Heart rate monitoring is not continuous unless working out; Wide bezel

Huawei Fit review: An affordable smartwatch with an 8-day battery life

There's plenty to like here, from the extremely good battery life and decent water resistance rating to that always-on time display. Heart rate monitors aren't a given in this class of wearable and swim-tracking is an unexpected bonus. And it looks ok, especially if you swap in a third-party strap. But it feels cheap, and perhaps more worryingly, it isn't particularly cheap - the price tag isn't really low enough to compensate for the missing features (such as GPS) or the dim and sluggish display. We also find the watch face options rather poor, offering little useful information. Better deals may and indeed should become available (on Amazon it costs less in dollars than in pounds, which suggests the UK option is overpriced at present) but until then, we'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Huawei Watch Fit - Graphite Black STIA-B09 - GB review

The Huawei Watch Fit looks like an Apple Watch but does most of what Huawei's more expensive smartwatches do for a lot less....

Good AMOLED display Reliable fitness tracking Affordable price tag 10-day battery life

Unoriginal design Screen can be a little pokey Limited Lite OS software Worrisome strap mechanism

Huawei Watch Fit - Graphite Black STIA-B09 - GB review

The Huawei Watch Fit is a surprisingly nice wearable to live with. We grew to like the not quite smartwatch-sized screen and it pulls some of the best things we like about Huawei's smartwatches.

Likeable design; Packed with features; Animated workouts a nice addition

Huawei Watch Fit - Graphite Black STIA-B09 - GB review

The Huawei Watch Fit doesn't revolutionise the fitness tracking market, but by getting most of the basics right it sets itself up as a solid option for casual and newbies who are only just getting started working out.

Intuitive UI; Free guided workouts are useful to beginners; Decent battery life; Bright; colourful display

No real app support; No local music

Huawei Watch Fit - Graphite Black STIA-B09 - GB review

Light weight, comfy and feature-packed, the Watch Fit is an affordable and simplified fitness tracker that will appeal to anyone wanting to kickstart or maintain an active lifestyle, but serious athletes will want to look for something more fully-fledged.

Great value for money; Lightweight and comfortable; Easy to use

Finicky phone pairing; Straps aren’t interchangeable

Huawei Watch Fit - Graphite Black STIA-B09 - GB review

The Huawei Watch Fit is one of the best, cheap smartwatches you can get in the market, bar none. While you’re losing small options like interchangeable straps, the vastly lower price and robust features more than make up for it.

Very affordable for a smartwatch; AMOLED display is bright and readable even under the sun; More or less the same features you get from Huawei’s more expensive smartwatches; Incredible battery life

Lite OS is light on features; GPS takes a few minutes to lock on; Watch straps are not replaceable
