Inbuilt Camera Adds Great Features

The Nest Hub Max's built in camera allows the unit to recognise each of us and present individual calendars. Additionally, it facilitates video calling with phones that have Google Duo installed. Plus, last but not least, it's a fully functional 'Nest' security camera. But the downside of the security camera function is that you have to pay $9 per month for a good standard of ongoing recording/alert functionality (and I'm currently looking for cheaper home security solutions like local recording with Eufy cameras). Overall, though, this is a great upgrade from the smaller Nest Hub, which I now use as a high-tech alarm clock/screen in the bedroom.

Google Nest Hub Max review review

Sound quality is good enough for day-long music listening; Smart small-footprint design; Screen adjusts to ambient light brilliantly; Responsive voice recognition;

Nest cam support needs some work; Screen could be sharper; No Netflix support (yet);

Google Nest Home Hub Max - Charcoal GA00639-AU review

The Google Nest Hub Max is a bigger, better Nest Hub meant more shared and communal spaces. The larger screen makes viewing photos and videos a treat, and the sound quality is improved as well.

Great display; Face Match facial recognition feature is pretty accurate; Ability to play and pause media with gestures; Can double as a Nest Cam; Very good sound quality; Fairly priced

Video calling only works with Google Duo; Gestures can be a little finicky

Google Nest Hub Max hands-on: Bigger, louder and with a camera

It would be easy to dismiss the Google Nest Hub Max as a bigger version of the existing Nest Hub (previously the Google Home Hub), designed to combat the threat of the bigger Amazon Echo Show.

Face Match works brilliantly; Can act as a security camera; Excellent sound quality

Few video playback options; Nest integration doesn't work with G Suite accounts

Google Nest Hub Max review

It might only be available in two colours but Google has brought the two things we asked for to the Nest Hub Max - a larger screen and a camera.

Google Nest Home Hub Max - Charcoal GA00639-AU review

On the surface, there isn’t much to say about the Nest Hub Max. Like it’s smaller sibling , the Max made its way to Canada after launching in the U.S. — although it didn’t wait quite as long as the Nest Hub.

Larger screen; Better sound; interesting face recognition tech

Not the cheapest smart display; No physical camera shutter; The volume button placement is annoying

Google Nest Hub Max Review

Not just bigger than the original Google Nest Hub, the new Google Nest Hub Max is a better product all round. The larger display makes it easier to see what’s going on, although it would be nice if there were more options for playing video. Sound has been improved and the Nest Hub Max is now a decent music player in its own right. With the camera, you can now make video calls and you get Face Match for personalised results. You can also turn the Hub Max into a full security camera. The requirement for a Google Account (not G Suite) is a little annoying but if you’re looking for the best Google Assistant-powered smart display, this is the one.

Face Match works brilliantly; Can act as a security camera; Excellent sound quality;

Few video playback options; Nest integration doesn't work with G Suite accounts;

Google Nest Hub Max review: Putting the Echo Show on notice

Adding the camera not only makes the Max significantly different from the smaller original, it's a logical way to add heaps of appeal. In one masterstroke it makes the Nest Hub Max a three-in-one device: a security camera, speaker and smart display.

Great design and display; Nest camera adds loads of features; Fantastic smart home control; Good sound quality; YouTube and Netflix integration; Brilliant price

Nest functions need a subscription; No built-in Zigbee support; Google Home app could be more intuitive
