Traditionally, God of War 's barbarous antihero, Kratos, has long been synonymous with severed heads and limbs and all sorts of other delirious horrors visited upon his enemies. This, however, isn't the picture of Kratos that 2018's God of War is drawn to.
God of War is the perfect trifecta of innovative gameplay, gorgeous visuals and engrossing narrative. It's a game that grabbed me from its opening moments and had me holding my breath for almost 30 hours.
Norse surrender
Excellent combat; Character and environmental design is incredible; Stunning soundtrack; Enemy variety; Gripping story
Kratos has changed, and with him, God of War. This is the first game in the saga created from scratch for PlayStation 4, and it comes five years after God of War: Ascension. Behind it there's a seven-game legacy (two on PS2, two on PSP, two on PS3, and one on mobile) that has always followed the...
When it comes to reinventing game franchises, 2018's God of War is about as drastic as it gets. The original three God of War games were all critical and commercial successes, and were known to be linear experiences with fixed camera angles and a penchant for action-packed gameplay, with story...
Since its first reveal back at E3 2016, gamers have been awaiting the release of God of War with a mixture of palpable excitement and a tinge of anxiety. Sure, those visuals looked stunning, but all the apparent changes to gameplay and tone had many wondering if this was going to still be the God of...
Huge well-written main quest; Superb; fun; and deep combat system; Lots of upgrading and customization options
Awkward camera; Easy to get side-tracked; Starts off a bit slowly
I expected great action from and it delivers that handily. But I didn't expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Most of the combat and gameplay mechanics have been completely overhauled, like the fixed camera that's been replaced with a third-person over-the-shoulder free camera, as well as the addition of a companion.
Stunning visuals; Great soundtrack; Solid gear upgrade system; Interesting depiction of Norse mythology; Massive open-world free to explore; Excellent challenges and puzzles; A lot of optional content; Dynamic combat system
Story could have been better; Few epic fights in story mode; Strong characters; but relationship falls flat; Combat can become repetitive; Skill tree can use some improvements
I was always a critic of a Greek god being in an entirely different realm with different rules. I thought for sure the game was just using Kratos and the God of War IP to get it over the marketing line, but I've been proven massively wrong. This is a God of War game, and it's fucking brilliant.
