I can't tell you about all the dreams I've had about a camera like the Fujifilm GFX 50R, but I can tell you about how I'm incredibly pleased that it seems to be modeled akin to the Fujifilm GW690 III of many years ago.

Just like medium format film cameras in the past, the FUJIFILM GFX 50R has been developed in pursuit of a compact and lightweight system while delivering the ultimate picture quality for everyday snapshots and street photography.

What We Love. Medium format film shooters need not despair any longer. That is, if the only thing that's keeping them from switching is the high price point of these digital medium formats on the market these days.

The Fujifilm GFX 50R is a rangefinder-styled medium format mirrorless camera with 50 Megapixels and a built-in electronic viewfinder. It's the second GFX body and shares the same sensor as the original 50S, but packs it into a more compact body that's 145g lighter and 25mm thinner.

Fujifilm stripped a little from its $5,900 GFX 50S to rejigger a $4,500 version in the GFX 50R, but it looks like there are a couple potential drawbacks. The design is completely different, more reminiscent of the X-Pro2, and friendlier for walkaround photography similar to the Hasselblad X1D. It's slated to ship in November.

The company's eagerly awaited "affordable" version of its GFX 50S trims features you probably won't miss -- and a couple you might.
