Fujifilm GFX 50R review

Medium format cameras have always been pretty much a niche offering. When Fujifilm first announced its GFX series cameras at Photokina 2016 it marked a step towards making these behemoths available to the masses. At £6k, pretty rich masses, but it was still more affordable than ever before. With the GFX 50R, announced another two years later, Fujifilm goes even further to democratise medium format. It’s still not “cheap” by any means (current pricing stands at about £4k), but it’s getting better and within the realms of the budgets of serious enthusiasts. There’s also a booming second hand market and camera hire companies to think of too - if you need a camera for a special shoot, it’s worth thinking about those. Using the GFX 50R is not a breeze. There’s difficult autofocusing, a big and slightly awkwardly designed body and massive lenses to contend with. But that image quality is enough to make all of those concerns vanish once you look at them on your computer - next time you look at anything with a smaller sensor you’ll no doubt be left disappointed. Overall - if you want the ultimate in image quality and are looking for something which is not too ridiculous to transport - the GFX 50R could well be the one for you.

Fujifilm GFX 50R

The Fujifilm GFX-50R is a highly specialized digital camera designed for the top-most image quality. It offers a slightly less bulky version of the GFX-50S at the expense of having fewer controls and a fixed EVF.

Spectacular sharpness; Class-leading dynamic-range; Very low image-noise; Nicely saturated colors; Very reliable metering; Very precise autofocus; Impressive throughput; Ultra-sharp EVF; Excellent build-quality; Instant video capture

Sub-par AF speed; Frequent yellow cast with Auto WB; Long black-out; Slow shot-to-shot speed; Slow mode transitions; Innacurate preview; Complex controls; Quite bulky; Very poor battery-life; Soft aperture detents With all current XF-mount lenses

Fujifilm GFX 50R

We're naming the GFX 50R our Editors' Choice, just as we did with the 50S. Either camera will serve you well. Choosing between them is simply a matter of deciding between the SLR body style of the 50S, or the rangefinder design offered by the 50R.

51MP medium format sensor; Rangefinder-style design; Tilting touch LCD; Dust and splash protection; Film Simulation modes; Dual UHS-II slots

Doesn't balance well with larger lenses; Screen articulation limited to one axis; Autofocus doesn't compete with 35mm cameras

Fujifilm GFX 50R Review

Fujifilm lowered the price of entry for medium format photography with its GFX 50S, which debuted at $6,499 in early 2017 and has since enjoyed a $1,000 reduction. The follow-up, the GFX 50R ($4,499), doesn't make any changes from an imaging perspective. Instead, Fujifilm has repackaged the 50S in a smaller, more affordable body, more suitable for documentary and travel photography. It's just as capable as the 50S, and also earns Editors' Choice marks. Rangefinder Styling The GFX 50R gets its name from its body style, which puts the viewfinder at the corner, just as it would be in a rangefinder camera. The 50R isn't a rangefinder, of course—its viewfinder shows the view through the lens, like an SLR. The Fujifilm GFX 50R matches the imaging capabilities of its fraternal twin, the GFX 50S, but is better styled for use outside the studio.

Fujifilm GFX 50R Review

The GFX 50R won’t be for everyone – even those who can afford it – but if you need to be relatively mobile without compromising on image quality, this deserves to be on your shortlist.

Masses of details in images; Relatively light body; Robust build; Great JPEGs straight out of camera; Two cards slots;

Not the easiest body to handle; No 4K video recording; Small AF lever a little fiddly; EVF can show aliasing with fine details; No sensor-based image stabilisation;

Fujifilm GFX 50R Review

The Fujifilm GFX 50R brings medium format digital photography down to a more attainable price point than we've seen before, and does so while offering exceptional image quality in a reasonably compact yet well-built body. The ergonomics suffer a bit from the smaller grip, and some competitors with smaller sensors suffer only a slight image quality hit while being more flexible overall. That said, the GFX 50R remains a joy to use, the images a joy to view, and it's an excellent way to get access to Fujifilm's lineup of GF medium format lenses.

Discerning landscape and studio shooters that are on the hunt for the sharpest details they can feast their eyes on.;

Photographers of dynamic or moving subjects who need good continuous autofocus performance, and those looking to shoot video along with stills.;

Fujifilm GFX 50R review

Fujifilm launched the GFX 50R as a smaller, lighter and considerably cheaper alternative to the company's debut GFX model, the GFX 50S – just as full-frame cameras used to be confined to the professional market, but are now very much within the reach of enthusiast photographers, it appears medium...

Superb detail and low image noise; Responsive touchscreen; Great build yet lightweight; Relatively affordable for medium format

Underwhelming video specs; Not the easiest body to handle; OIS in only three current lenses; Awkwardly placed USB port

What We Love. Medium format film shooters need not despair any longer. That is, if the only thing that's keeping them from switching is the high price point of these digital medium formats on the market these days.

Super high resolution; Excellent image quality; Compact design; Lightweight; Great dynamic range; Good grip; Weather sealing; Dual card slot; 3.69M-dot EVF; Face and eye detection; Great noise handling; Customizable buttons

No phase detection AF points; AF could be better in low light; No IBIS

First of all the image quality from the GFX50R is first class, in particular now the Capture One Pro supports the RAF that makes it very attractive to me since I use multiple cameras systems and almost all of them supported by Capture One Pro.
