The Fujifilm GFX 50R is a rangefinder-styled medium format mirrorless camera with 50 Megapixels and a built-in electronic viewfinder. It's the second GFX body and shares the same sensor as the original 50S, but packs it into a more compact body that's 145g lighter and 25mm thinner.

Medium format cameras have always been pretty much a niche offering. When Fujifilm first announced its GFX series cameras at Photokina 2016 it marked a step towards making these behemoths available to the masses. At £6k, pretty rich masses, but it was still more affordable than ever before. With the GFX 50R, announced another two years later, Fujifilm goes even further to democratise medium format. It’s still not “cheap” by any means (current pricing stands at about £4k), but it’s getting better and within the realms of the budgets of serious enthusiasts. There’s also a booming second hand market and camera hire companies to think of too - if you need a camera for a special shoot, it’s worth thinking about those. Using the GFX 50R is not a breeze. There’s difficult autofocusing, a big and slightly awkwardly designed body and massive lenses to contend with. But that image quality is enough to make all of those concerns vanish once you look at them on your computer - next time you look at anything with a smaller sensor you’ll no doubt be left disappointed. Overall - if you want the ultimate in image quality and are looking for something which is not too ridiculous to transport - the GFX 50R could well be the one for you.

The GFX 50R won’t be for everyone – even those who can afford it – but if you need to be relatively mobile without compromising on image quality, this deserves to be on your shortlist.

Fujifilm stripped a little from its $5,900 GFX 50S to rejigger a $4,500 version in the GFX 50R, but it looks like there are a couple potential drawbacks. The design is completely different, more reminiscent of the X-Pro2, and friendlier for walkaround photography similar to the Hasselblad X1D. It's slated to ship in November.

The company's eagerly awaited "affordable" version of its GFX 50S trims features you probably won't miss -- and a couple you might.

The Fujifilm GFX 50R brings medium format digital photography down to a more attainable price point than we've seen before, and does so while offering exceptional image quality in a reasonably compact yet well-built body. The ergonomics suffer a bit from the smaller grip, and some competitors with smaller sensors suffer only a slight image quality hit while being more flexible overall. That said, the GFX 50R remains a joy to use, the images a joy to view, and it's an excellent way to get access to Fujifilm's lineup of GF medium format lenses.

Fujifilm lowered the price of entry for medium format photography with its GFX 50S, which debuted at $6,499 in early 2017 and has since enjoyed a $1,000 reduction. The follow-up, the GFX 50R ($4,499), doesn't make any changes from an imaging perspective. Instead, Fujifilm has repackaged the 50S in a smaller, more affordable body, more suitable for documentary and travel photography. It's just as capable as the 50S, and also earns Editors' Choice marks. Rangefinder Styling The GFX 50R gets its name from its body style, which puts the viewfinder at the corner, just as it would be in a rangefinder camera. The 50R isn't a rangefinder, of course—its viewfinder shows the view through the lens, like an SLR.
