Fujifilm Finepix X100

Did anyone mention an age of austerity? Certainly not at Fuji Towers, from whence has appeared the manufacturer's most expensive and inevitably most exciting digital camera for coming up to a decade.

Superb quality quality; Exceptional image quality; Versatile yet easy to use

Very expensive; Fixed zoom lens; Slightly fiddly controls

Fujifilm FinePix X100

The Fujifilm FinePix X100 is no ordinary compact. Made for the high-end market, this retro-looking, magnesium alloy beast is built around a large 12.3-megapixel APS-C sized sensor and fixed 23mm F/2.0 lens (that's 35mm in equivalent terms). There's no zoom to be found here.

Great image quality; unique design; great build quality; ingenious viewfinder

Not the fastest AF; some macro focus issues; expensive; not for the mass market

This camera takes beautiful photographs with amazing clarity for a point-and-shoot. The color reproduction is incredible - much better than my mirrorless DSLR which has that typical cool washed out lifelessness of standard digital cameras regardless of price-point or white-balance setting.

"State Of The Art, Hidden In A Retro Design"

Despite taking it up as a "option" (now there is an old term for you) when I was at school, to be honest photography has always alluded me. I'm very much a point and click kind of guy, I like a camera to focus for me, and essentially be a perfect shot.

As advanced or as simplistic as you want it to be

Almost impossible to understand manual

Not impressed

Not impressed. Paid a lot of money for a fixed lens camera. Yes it's fast to auto focus and yes it as all the film simulations but it's £1200. I ended up returning it and getting a Ricoh gr for £400. Same results and you get used to the slower auto focus. Save some money and get a gr

Immediately improved my photos

A great camera for hiking, city walking, or on vacation. Easy to use for a beginner, but it packs a great feature set that experts will love (despite its convenient size). The design and build on this camera are impeccable.

Great everywhere camera

Unlike the bulky DSLR, I can take Fuji X100 with me anywhere I go. The sensor-lens combo produces excellent image quality, better than most DSLR I used. Handling takes time to get used to. Prime lens is wonderful. I don't find myself missing the wide-angle, since there is panorama mode.

The most capable and interesting camera that I've owned.

I bought this because of favorable reviews and because I'm 80 years old with a fondness for excellent technology and a certain 'retro' aspect. (At one time my favorite camera was a 1938 Leica IIIc). The Fujifilm X100F is, to me, astonishing in its flexibility and ease of control...

Fujifilm X100F review

Fujifilm's star is now so high in the camera makers' firmament that it's easy to forget just how recently the firm was primarily a purveyor of identikit zoom compacts. The camera that set it on course towards higher things was the original X100, with its retro rangefinder-style design, fixed lens,...

+ Traditional control dials are quick and engaging to use; + Superb JPEG colour rendition and excellent raw image quality; + Unique hybrid viewfinder gives a useful choice of viewing options; + Stunning rangefinder-style design

ISO dial can be awkward to use with the camera to your eye; Lens is a bit prone to flare; Filter thread and hood adapter is a pricey optional extra
