Back in September 2010 Fuji announced the X100, the first in a new line of retro-styled premium compacts. It featured a sharp 23mm prime, an APS-C sensor, and a very portable body, which made the camera a huge hit with enthusiasts who wanted to fit DSLR quality into an inside jacket pocket.

Review: Fujifilm X100F

Fujifilm's fixed lens flagships seem to get better with every generation, and the series' fourth member (hence the "F") is here to stake its claim as the world's most desirable travel camera.

Fujifilm X100F review review

Sharp, bright 23mm lens; Excellent high ISO performance; Compact size and solid build; Fast autofocus;

Fixed focal length might occasionally frustrate; No 4K video recording;

Fujifilm X100F review

The X100F gets full marks not for being the best all-round compact camera, but for being brilliant at what it does. Namely, packing the build and performance of a premium camera into something that can (almost) slip into your jacket pocket. There's no doubt that £1249 is a lot to spend on a compact and, without 4K video, an articulating screen or proper interchangeable lenses, the X100F isn't the most versatile camera around. But it is the purist's choice, with superb image quality, well laid out controls and a beautiful design. If you're eyeing up a premium retro compact to be your main camera, then you should definitely also consider Fujifilm's X-Pro2, while bearing in mind the considerable cost of adding lenses to its £1349 body-only price tag. If you love stills and are happy with a 35mm equivalent lens, though, look no further. Buy the Fujifilm X100F camera here from Wex photographic

Fujifilm X100F

Fujifilm's X100 series has long been a hit with photographers. Its classic design-the first version helped to popularize the retro look for digital cameras -and optical viewfinder appeals to modern photographers who, in the past, would have opted for a compact rangefinder.

Crisp wide-angle lens; Bright f/2 aperture; In-lens ND filter; Fast autofocus; Hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder; Focus select joystick; 1/4,000-second leaf shutter; Physical control dials; Film Simulation modes; Wi-Fi

Lens lacks stabilization; Video limited to 1080p; Sometimes struggles with tracking subjects

With a 23mm F2 fixed lens (35mm equivalent) and a 24.3-megapixel APS-C size X-Trans CMOS III image sensor, the first thing you'll notice about the is its retro stylings. The X100F is simple and elegant.

Outstanding image quality in all types of scenes; Minimal noise in photos shot at high native ISO settings; Prime f/2 lens produces very sharp detail in images; 91-point AF mode is upgrade over X100F's predecessor; Full manual control modes; including manual focus; available; New image processor...

Camera's operational aspects are a little quirky; it takes some practice to use this model efficiently, Lack of a mode dial may confuse some photographers at first, Combination shutter speed/ISO dial is odd, but it's functional once you get the hang of it, Prime lens is sharp and fast, but has no...

Fujifilm X100F review

Fujifilm's star is now so high in the camera makers' firmament that it's easy to forget just how recently the firm was primarily a purveyor of identikit zoom compacts. The camera that set it on course towards higher things was the original X100, with its retro rangefinder-style design, fixed lens,...

+ Traditional control dials are quick and engaging to use; + Superb JPEG colour rendition and excellent raw image quality; + Unique hybrid viewfinder gives a useful choice of viewing options; + Stunning rangefinder-style design

ISO dial can be awkward to use with the camera to your eye; Lens is a bit prone to flare; Filter thread and hood adapter is a pricey optional extra

Fujifilm X100F

The Fujifilm X100F is the latest in Fujifilm's series of fixed-length premium compact cameras. It features the latest generation X-Trans CMOS sensor, which has 24.3 megapixels - a jump up from the 16.3 megapixel sensor of the X100F's predecessor, the X100T.

The X100F is the fourth iteration of a, by now, much loved series. They might not have quite the 'every photographer should try shooting with one' appeal of a true rangefinder, but the combination of its large sensor, small body, classic looks and layout has attracted a dedicated user base.

Fujifilm X100F Review

The X100F's combination of image quality, usability and styling make it the best in the series yet. It's still a niche camera, but this latest version's limitations stem primarily from its design, rather than its implementation. A true photographers' camera.

Photographers who want to revel in and be challenged by shooting with a fixed lens, fixed focal length camera.;

Anyone looking for flexibility or immediacy. Or video.;
