Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

A 35mm 0.5x macro lens may be an odd choice for one of the RF line’s first few lenses, but it’s nice to have a compact alternative to the other optics released so far. It’s a shame it’s not a true macro lens, but if you think of it more as a wide-aperture, wide-angle with the advantage of...

Compact and well balanced on EOS R, Great build quality, Lens control ring is a useful inclusion, Fast AF system, Great sharpness at moderate apertures, Very good corner sharpness wide open

Not a true 1:1 macro lens, Moderate vignetting at widest apertures, A little curvilinear distortion, No focus limit switch, AF motor somewhat noisy during stills

Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

“The iPhone 14 isn't a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor. But with a great design, screen, performance, and cameras, that's far from a bad thing at all.”

Comfortable, high-end build, OLED screen looks fantastic, A15 chip performs great, Good camera upgrades, Dependable battery life, Helpful safety features

60Hz display, No telephoto camera, eSIM might be a pain for some

The iPhone 14 isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it’s still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Great camera, Good battery, Emergency features are cool, Still excellent performance

Display could use some upgrades

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM Macro is a versatile carry-around lens for Canon's new EOS R system. The only non-'L' lens in the initial RF lineup, the 35mm F1.8 provides a lightweight, compact and relatively affordable solution for EOS R and RP shooters.

Canon EOS R shooters that want a compact, sharp lens for everyday shooting and closeup work.

Architectural photographers, or anyone that shoots in poor weather, or regularly needs to capture video (autofocus noise can be an issue).

Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

I enjoyed using the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro during my time with it. The light weight and strong image quality, combined with the affordable price, means that it deserves a place in a lot of photographers’ bags.

Strong optical performance in almost every metric, from sharpness to flare, Surprisingly advanced handling features for an inexpensive lens, with extensive manual controls, Built-in image stabilization is unusual for a 35mm prime and works well, Impressive close-up capabilities make it a very...

No weather sealing, Externally focusing design feels cheap and is less weatherproof, Vignetting is on the high side, Lens hood is not included (and if you do get one, it attaches to the moving portion of the barrel), Focusing is loud and hunts more often than most Canon RF lenses in low light,...

Canon RF f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens review

Although not the perfect choice for the EOS RP, the RF 35mm f/1.8 is the only RF-mount lens so far that fits comfortably on the lighter, more compact camera body. It’s also the most affordable of the RF lenses on offer so far.
