The new Canon EOS RP is a full frame camera that shoots 4k and has a fully articulating screen and it's only $1300. It does have its flaws, but for that money, its a great buy. We got our hands on the camera before the announcement and put it through the paces to evaluate it for you!

Canon EOS RP review: Full-frame mirrorless goes affordable

There's little doubt that the future of Canon's advanced amateur and pro market lies in the R series, and the RP offers an affordable route into the system. Much as the EOS 300D – Canon's first sub-£1000 DSLR – was for the EOS range in 2003.

Great camera for the price; Solid AF and metering performance; Top noise control in high ISO; Touchscreen control

Poor battery life; Cropped 4K capture; Smaller body and grip - some lenses aren't well balanced; Current lack of affordable lenses

Canon EOS RP review

While its competitors are going to great pains to create increasingly advanced – and increasingly expensive – high end full-frame mirrorless cameras, Canon is catering to crop sensor consumers who are looking for a full-frame option that won't break their back or their bank balance.

Svelte; lightweight body; Fully articulating screen; 4K video; Aggressively priced

Body feels small for big RF lenses; Loses the R's sensor shutter; 1.6x crop + no Dual Pixel AF in 4K; Miserly battery life

EDITOR'S NOTES: This page was originally published as EOS RP Hands-On First Impressions on 2/13/2019. This piece was based on a one-day press event in New Orleans for which Canon paid our travel & lodging expenses.

Excellent image quality; Nice dynamic range; Gorgeous colors; Competitive ISO performance; Great build and ergonomics; Simple interface; Awesome touchscreen functionality; Focus bracketing available; Availability of lenses

No IBIS for stills; EyeAF isn't competitive; Cropped 4K; Slow continuous shooting; Weather sealing could be better

Canon EOS RP

The RP doesn't quite earn Editors' Choice marks, but it still gets a strong recommendation. Its form factor and price are big reasons. But you also can't discount the compatibility with Canon flashes and (with an adapter) SLR lenses, which matter to photographers invested in the Canon system.

Compact body with full-frame sensor; Vari-angle LCD; Integrated EVF; Quick, accurate autofocus; Macro stacking and time-lapse tools; Wi-Fi; Attractive price

Small EVF; Low-cost native lenses not available yet; Inconsistent face and eye detection; 4K video suffers from heavy crop; Sensor shows limited dynamic range; Small battery; No built-in flash

Canon EOS RP Review

The Canon EOS RP is the opposite of exciting. It is an inexpensive, full-frame camera that recycles old tech and dumbs down certain features for no practical reason other than to justify the large price gap that exists between it and the higher-end EOS R . And it will sell like hotcakes.

Affordable price; Excellent autofocus and metering; Great JPEG image quality; Good high ISO performance; Fully articulating touchscreen

Some purposefully truncated features; Video feels like an afterthought; Unimpressive RAW image quality

Canon EOS RP review

The Canon EOS RP is the most affordable new full frame camera to date, whether DSLR or mirrorless. Sure, there's often bargains to be had on older models, like Sony's frequently discounted A7 II, but in terms of newly-released full-framers, the RP achieves a refreshingly low price at a time when...
