The pictures below illustrate the angles of view on 35mm full frame and APS-C camera bodies:

Excellent image quality when stopped down; Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration; Fast and accurate autofocus with full-time manual override

Distinctly soft and 'dreamy' at wider apertures (F1.4-F1.8; Bokeh chromatic aberration; most visible at wide apertures; Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (essentially disappears by F2.8; Somwhat susceptible to flare

Canon's 50/1.4 is a bit heavier than the 50/1.8 but it gives you simultaneous AF/MF because of its USM focusing motor . It is one f-stop slower than the 50/1.0 but much lighter weight and less than one-sixth the price.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Review

Available at a fraction of the price of its f/1.2 brother, how does this sub-£300 prime compare. Read the WDC Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review to find out.

Fantastic MTF figures

AF is slightly unrefined

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Review

Ask a bunch of photographers what their favorite lens is - and you will likely hear the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens mentioned. It is sharp, small, light, inexpensive and with an f1.4 aperture, fast . The 50 f/1.4 finds a home with many photographers - from pro to casual - for several reasons.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM - Full Format Review / Lab Test Report

It is no surprise that the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a very popular choice among Canon users when it comes to choosing a standard lens. It offers probably the best compromise between quality and price here. That said it's not a flawless lens when used on a full format DSLR.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Review

A standard 50mm lens with a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 and silent ultrasonic focusing.

Performance-wise Canon's 50mm f/1.4 USM is fairly typical, showing it is capable of producing images with excellent sharpness across the frame at optimum apertures; For low light shooting it would have been nice to see it perform better at f/1.4, but it is still quite capable of producing a decent...

I'm waiting for Canon to deliver a new 50mm II, this one its to old, optics quality aren't that good, corners specially, Af its not precise or accurate on any camera.. I have use a few all the same.. at this moment I would recommend a Sigma Art or Tamron 45mm...

Excellent low light lens

I've had my EF 50mm 1.4 lens for many years. My Canon 6D normally carries a 24-105 L series lens. The 50mm is used when I want to lighten my load or shoot photos indoors with natural light.

Great lens for the cost

Great lens for the price. Sharp at f1.8 and greater. Light. Focus can be a little slow in darker environments. Much better than the Canon 50 f1.8. It can be hard to justify paying for the Canon 50L lens (f1.2) which is 4x more expensive over this lens.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review by polizonte

This lens was acquired to be used with a 5Dmkii - both were purchased at almost close-out prices so I consider them to be bargains. Shooting mostly from f4-f8, the lens produces sharp images with very little distortion and nice colors.

sharp @ f4-f8; relatively low distortion; good focus

feels delicate
