Beats EP On-Ear Headphones - Blue ML9D2PA/A review

“Though they sound great, the Beats EP are limited by a wire and complete poorly at their price.”

Exceptional sound; Reasonable comfort; Good noise reduction

Durability questions; Wired connection only

Beats EP review: Beats' least expensive headphone is also its best value

Beats makes plenty of headphones with sky-high prices, but its entry-level EP headphone is a surprisingly good value. The list price is $100, £90 and AU$140, but you can find it online in the US and UK for about a third off -- closer to $70 and £60.The EP is an on-ear model that isn't as swanky as Beats' somewhat forgotten on-ear Mixr, as well as the over-ear Executive and Pro models. But thanks to its reinforced metal frame, it reminds me of low-frills versions of those headphones. By low-frills, I mean it isn't incredibly flashy and it doesn't fold up or fold flat for travel (it has no hinges).

The Beats EP may be a simple, wired, on-ear headphone, but it's arguably Beats' best headphone for the money.

Reinforced with stainless steel, the affordable Beats Ep is sturdily built and sounds good for the money; It's relatively comfortable for an on-ear model and includes an inline microphone for calls.

Doesn't fold up or fold flat; on-ear design has its downsides (clamps down on your ears).

Beats EP review: Good sound trapped by wired limitations

As an act of full transparency, I’ve been struggling with how to write about the Beats EP headphones for some time. They are wired headphones and deserve to be treated as such. Yet at the same time, they come with a price tag that puts them closely alongside budget wireless headphones, most of which come with features and capabilities that just aren’t possible with the Beats EP. Perhaps that’s the best way to write about the $130 Beats EP. They’re not the audio juggernauts that higher-end wired options oftentimes are, and they’re not the features-first wireless cans that seemingly surround them. They’re somewhere in between, awkwardly in the middle of two distinct parts of the genre. Truthfully, I could wrap up this section of the review in two words: Not much. Other than the headphones themselves, the contents of the Beats packaging include a foldable carrying pouch, a quick start guide, and a warranty card. Objectively speaking, the minimalist style of the EP packaging isn’t a major ...
