Asus ROG Strix XG438Q

Other than that niche concern, though, the Asus ROG Strix XG438Q is a well-placed, well-priced first step for this new category of large-but not ultra -large-gaming displays. It sets a standard that PC gamers will get to appreciate and enjoy for about two years before the console crowd catches up.

Gaming performance is top-notch; Larger screen size makes seeing enemies easier; Display Widget software is highly customizable; Future-proof for next-gen consoles

Display Stream Compression feature not integrated; Big enough to make some users motion-sick; Not ideal for pro content creators; BGR profile might make text a little fuzzy

Asus ROG Strix XG438Q

The Asus ROG Strix XG438Q is more expensive than almost any other gaming monitor on the market – and with good reason. This screen combines a vast 43in diagonal with HDR, AMD FreeSync 2 and a 4K resolution, and it's designed to sate both PC and console players – no surprise when it's the size of a...

Huge; immersive 43in 4K screen; Great core image quality; Punchy; powerful speakers; Good set of features

Looks a little dated; Size could not suit some situations; Not big enough for some living rooms; Middling HDR options

Asus ROG Strix XG438Q Review

It's huge, includes plenty of great quality features – but the high price and unique form factor mean it won't be suitable in every instance.

Asus ROG Strix XG438Q Review

What do you get when you cross-breed an Nvidia Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) with a regular-size gaming monitor? We're not sure, exactly, but it look something like Asus' new 43-inch ROG Strix XG438Q. Not quite as big as a BFGD, this $1,099 gaming monitor impresses on size and performance, but it's missing a few key features that we'd expect to see out of displays in this premium price segment. That said, if you've been looking for an exceptionally quick 4K gaming monitor that can act both as a display for your computer and a moderate-size TV for your space-strapped media den, this monitor blurs the ultra-high-definition line between where your computer desk ends and your living-room couch begins. Taking the "B" out of "BFGD" I've reviewed big monitors before, but the ROG Strix XG438Q is the first that truly feels like a gaming monitor, rather than a TV that found its way onto your desk. At 43 inches, this 3,840-by-2,160-pixel (4K) HDR monitor hits a sweet spot between the...

If a TV or an Nvidia BFGD is too big for your gaming, but a regular monitor is too small, the 43-inch Asus ROG Strix XG438Q is a lustworthy alternative for serious players. It's not cheap, but its panel is nimble and eye-popping.
