Apple HomePod mini Review

The Apple HomePod mini speaker offers Siri voice assistance and smart home control in an attractive little orb design for just $99, but the Amazon Echo delivers substantially more audio power for the same price. There’s no shortage of smart speakers to choose from these days, but recent months have placed the focus on affordable, often spherical options. Apple's new HomePod mini, a $99 alternative to the larger, more powerful $299 HomePod, competes primarily against the $99 orb-like Amazon Echo (4th Generation) and the non-spherical $99 Google Nest Audio. If audio is your top priority, Apple's speaker is outperformed by Amazon's, as well as some other, non-smart wireless models in the $100 price range—the HomePod mini delivers solid, clean mono audio, but the Echo is substantially larger and more powerful, offering a stronger sense of bass response. That said, if you're already thoroughly invested in the Apple/iOS/HomeKit realm, the HomePod mini is still a strong smart speaker for the price.HomePod mini Design and Features The orb-shaped, 0.8-pound HomePod mini is available in space gray or white, and measures 3.3 by 3.9 inches (HW), with a flat panel on the top and on bottom preventing i...
Pros:
  • Solid audio performance with rich bass and bright highs
  • Multiple speakers can be grouped and used as stereo pairs
  • Easy Siri voice control
  • Good Apple Home app integration for smart home controls
Cons:
  • Not the absolute best audio quality for the price
  • No aux input

Apple HomePod Mini review

In terms of price and performance the HomePod Mini is a direct rival for Amazon’s five-star Echo, but in size it’s more comparable to the smaller Dot. So why is it harder to recommend? From a musical point of view it comfortably outperforms expectations, offering a more balanced sound than something of this size would usually manage, but for now it still makes too many demands about where it gets its tunes from. Smart home skills still lag behind the competition a little too, and while Siri’s conversation skills are good, it can still sound a touch mechanical at times. Apple fans won’t mind those limitations much and there’s still a lot to love here, but for now the HomePod Mini falls just short of greatness. We’d still take one over that Thunderbolt cable though.
Pros:
  • Sounds great
  • Neat proximity features
  • Siri responds well
Cons:
  • Basically requires Apple Music
  • Won't work with Android
  • Smart home skills slightly limited

HomePod Mini review

The HomePod Mini excels in the audio department despite its small stature, but it falls over in terms of connectivity - not just the smart devices it can control, but the smartphones and services it's compatible with.
Pros:
  • Incredible sound
  • Small and inconspicuous
  • Siri is getting smarter
Cons:
  • Not as smart as other speakers
  • Only compatible with Apple devices
  • No Bluetooth connectivity

Exactly as described

Had some troubles with getting product to remain connected to Bluetooth as I come and go to the room but other than that an excellent product and easy to link between Apple devices. Does all described functions well.

Apple HomePod mini review: Finally, the smart speaker Apple needs

Apple rarely has any misses with its products, especially during the dominant era that began with the release of the first generation iPhone. Time after time, the Cupertino, California-based company has knocked it out of the ballpark, setting the bar in each product category it enters. Products such as the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and AirPods all have shown phenomenal appeal among consumers, but that doesn’t mean that Apple is infallible. The original HomePod is an example of one of those missed opportunities, and its failure impeded Apple’s ambitious efforts in the smart home realm. Pricing was partly to blame — a premium cost of $349 out of the gates made it a tough sell for the masses. But it looks as though Apple has listened to its critics. Now, though, there appears to be redemption with the HomePod mini. Even though Apple has gone smaller with this iteration, don’t let its size fool you, because this decision has grander implications that make it a formidable player in the smart home...
Pros:
  • Computational audio optimizes the experience
  • Clean sounding highs and mids
  • Compact size makes it discrete
  • It's the most affordable HomeKit home hub
Cons:
  • Siri lacks the advanced intelligence of her peers
  • Short power cord
