Olympus has been a leader in the Compact System Camera revolution, and the OM-D E-M5 will solidify that position. It is a good-looking, well-designed, highly capable camera. I recommend the 12-50 mm zoom lens with the body, which currently lists for £1,149 for the kit.

The Olympus OMD EM-5 brings a retro design from yesteryear and crams it full of modern gadgets, bells and whistles - but is it any good as a camera?

This is a 16 megapixel micro four thirds camera in a body reminiscent of Olympus OM 35mm SLRs, but a little smaller. The high resolution electronic viewfinder is built into the classic SLR hump. The LCD swivels vertically but not horizontally, so it is useful for waist- and low-level photography.

So, the first of the OM-D series cameras really has a lot of making up to do. And pro Olympus OM leanings don't actually mean it's going to get an easier run on these pages. In fact, if it doesn't deliver, the disappointment is going to be far more profound and the criticism harsher.

There's quite a lot to like about the OM-D EM-5. If I had to mention something negative, it would be the small buttons although they do allow for a larger screen so it's really more of a positive trade off than a minor gripe.

Many words have been printed about this diminutive camera and you've no doubt read all the technical discussion. But what can you DO with one Ergonomics: Oly were always pretty good with ergonomics - more shooting, less fiddling and the EM-5 is great, given the size restraints.

Overall a stellar package with the kit lens. The obvious items are that this is a really small package for SLR capabilities. I get really sharp photos overall and very little noise in low light.
