iPhone 6 and 6 Plus review: bigger and better, but with stiffer competition

Even with a slightly larger screen, the iPhone remains comfortable to hold. With fast performance, a great display, an elegant new design and a much-needed software update, it's one of the best smartphones you can buy right now.

Sleek new design; Great display; Comfortable to hold; Fast performance; Generally good camera; Large; beautiful display; Great camera with optical image stabilization; Long battery life; Fast performance

Battery life could be better; Lacks optical image stabilization; NFC can only be used for mobile payments; One-handed use is frustrating and uncomfortable; NFC can only be used for mobile payments

Apple is probably the only electronics company that can upset the smartphone status quo with a single announcement. When the iPhone 6 became official, longtime fans hammered the company's servers and stores for the privilege of being one of its first owners.

It's extremely thin; pleasingly light and eminently comfortable; with a 4.7-inch screen that's gorgeous despite its relatively low resolution

Disappointingly; its battery life isn't much better than what was packed into the iPhone 5s; and lags behind other major competitors.

Once the undisputed leader of the smartphone pack Apple has lost a lot of ground to its competitors who have copied innovated their way to much better hardware and software over the last few years.

Apple iPhone 6 (16GB) review: Bigger, faster, better

Apple's 2014 iPhones have made a predictable dent in both the media and the high-end smartphone market , with the 'upsizing' of the handsets and the simultaneous release of iOS 8 grabbing much attention.

Elegant slimline chassis with 4.7-inch screen; Solid build quality; Performance boost over iPhone 5s; Fast autofocus on iSight camera; Good new features in iOS 8

Battery life may not be enough for power users; No optical image stabilisation on iSight camera; No NFC-enabled Apple Pay support outside the US

Apple iPhone 6

Apple's devices have always been about premium design combined with good performance. Not the iPhone 6 though. Apple seems to have stumbled in the effort to make its iPhone bigger.

Best smartphone camera ever; Very good performance; Display is sharp and auto brightness is very good

Battery life needs a lot of work; Design may not please everybody; Very slippery body

Review: Apple iPhone 6

After years of mocking rivals for producing ever-bigger screens, Apple finally caved in this year, introducing not one such model, but two: the iPhone 6 with a 4.7in screen, and the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5in screen.

It's a brave new world for Apple's larger iPhone, and it's much the better for it

Apple iPhone 6 review: excellence exemplified

The folks in Cupertino have brought the iPhone into 2014 in typical Apple fashion: by implementing deceptively simple upgrades with admirable finesse. The new iPhone is more than just a bundle of software refinements mated to a larger display; it's a near-perfect blend of new ideas and proven, honed...

Outstanding build quality and feel in hand;  iOS more adaptable and capable than ever before;  Solid acoustic experience from earpods to loudspeaker;  iPhone app/accessory ecosystem still the strongest of all platforms

The iPhone 6 is available, directly from Apple, in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray trims and capacities of 16GB ($649), 64GB ($749) or 128GB ($849). This being Apple, there's no MicroSD expansion; the capacity you buy is what you're stuck with for the duration of your time with the phone

Apple iPhone 6 review

If you are an iPhone user, and you specifically want an iPhone to be your next smartphone, the iPhone 6 is great, but of course the iPhone 6s is even better. It's going to come down to budget ultimately, as the iPhone 6 is a brilliant iPhone that'll save you a few pennies if you're set on getting an...
