Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS Review

Sony's G Master lens family has a new member in the form of the FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS ($1,499.99). Like other GM lenses, it's designed for the high-resolution image sensors of today and tomorrow, but the 100mm F2.8 STF has a special trick up its sleeve. An integral apodization element cuts incoming light, smoothing out-of-focus highlights for a more pleasant background. Add in a close-focus mode that delivers 1:4 magnification and you get a versatile, albeit expensive, prime lens. It delivers extremely sharp images, but its light-gathering capability is compromised by the apodization element. It's a powerful tool for portraiture, but not the best choice to use in dim light. Design The 100mm F2.8 STF ($1,498.00 at Amazon) measures 4.7 by 3.4 inches (HD), weighs 1.5 pounds, and supports 72mm front filters. It's large compared with other lenses of this focal length, but balances well on full-frame Sony mirrorless bodies. Its barrel is tough polycarbonate, with a matching lens hood...

The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS lens features an APD element to smooth out-of-focus highlights, and is certain to appeal to serious portrait photographers.

Apodization filter for smooth backgrounds; Optical image stabilization; Designed for high-resolution image sensors; Dust and moisture resistant

Expensive; Apodization filter limits light-gathering capability

Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens - Brand New review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens - Brand New review

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens - Brand New review

Hannah Stryker / Review Geek The iPhone 14 is the latest iteration of Apple’s flagship device. Since its launch, the iPhone has set the standard of what a smartphone is, what it does, and how it looks. Fifteen years later, it’s still doing that.

Top-notch cameras, Amazing display, Snappy performance, Great battery life

It's just "this year's iPhone"

Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens - Brand New review

“The iPhone 14 isn't a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor. But with a great design, screen, performance, and cameras, that's far from a bad thing at all.”

Comfortable, high-end build, OLED screen looks fantastic, A15 chip performs great, Good camera upgrades, Dependable battery life, Helpful safety features

60Hz display, No telephoto camera, eSIM might be a pain for some
