Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

For Sonos fans and music fans after a smart speaker that delivers excellent sound quality for its size, a great design and fantastic integrated Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, the Sonos One won't disappoint. It is the smart speaker we've been waiting for.

Great design; Excellent sound quality; Brilliant Alexa and Google Assistant integration; Voice control; Seamless multi-room audio; Compatible with over 100+ music services; Easy setup

Voice control for some music services not as comprehensive as Amazon Music; Apple Music or Spotify; Expensive compared to other smart speakers; No Alexa calling compatibility

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

Sonos’ debut Alexa speaker is a cleanly designed, feature-rich and great-sounding device that brings together the best of both ecosystems. You’ve got the ever-improving Alexa on the one hand, and on the other you’ve got Sonos with its own multi-room smarts.

Full-bodied; rich sound; Combines best of Alexa and Sonos; Plays music while Alexa is muted; AirPlay 2 support; Google Assistant support

No Hi-Res Audio support

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

Sonos One: Sonos’ compact multi-room speaker meets Amazon’s Alexa, and they’re set to be best friends

Great sound quality, Apple Airplay 2 support, Amazon Alexa support; Google Assistant coming in 2018

Won't pair with Play:1; No speaker mount options

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

The Sonos One takes an already great wireless speaker in the form of the Play:1 and puts most of what’s great about Amazon’s Alexa in the top. The result is the best all-round music-focused smart speaker available in the UK.

great sound; Alexa; can hear you over noise; excellent app; plenty of choice of music service; compact; potential for Google Assistant; can be used to create stereo pair; ethernet; can be wall mounted

no Bluetooth or analogue audio input; full voice control limited to Amazon Music; Spotify and TuneIn; no option for 360-degree sound

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

With excellent sound and the choice of Alexa or Google Assistant, the Sonos One reaffirms its place as the best smart speaker for the money.

The Sonos One integrates both Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, with better sound quality than any smart speaker at its price; It offers smart home controls from both systems and its far-field microphone performs well.

The One costs twice as much as an Amazon Echo; You can't switch between the Assistant and Alexa on the fly, and need to run setup again; It doesn't work well if you have an Echo within earshot; There's no Bluetooth.

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

Smart speakers are big business now, and with Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home dominating the market, Sonos had a choice: step up or slip behind. The Sonos One shows the connected speaker stalwart chose to play the game, and not just with one virtual assistant but as many as it can.

Fits smoothly into an existing Sonos system; Assistant-agnostic means you won't be locked in; Sound quality belies the size and price; Controlling whole-home music by voice is transformational; All the usual Alexa skills

Some configuration stumbles; An Echo Dot is cheaper

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

What Sonos is really getting at is the same niche that Apple and Google plan to attack with their upcoming HomePod and Google Home Max speakers , respectively. It’s too soon to say exactly how those—or the aforementioned Echo Plus—compare to One from an audio standpoint, but Sonos will be...

Much richer audio quality than an Amazon Echo or Google Home; Compact; understated design is unlikely to look gaudy anywhere in the home; Mic array; while not perfect; is generally reliable for picking up voice commands; Can tap into virtually all the same Alexa “skills” as an Echo; $199 price point...

No way to control Spotify with voice commands at launch; no stated plan for Apple Music, Tidal, or Google Play Music voice commands on the horizon, No Bluetooth or wired audio connectors, Redesigned Sonos mobile app can be a bit clunky, No way to pair Sonos One and Sonos Play:1 speakers together in...

Sonos One Smart Speaker - Black SONOSONEB review

Though the Sonos One is currently limited to only Alexa, thats sure to change with future updates promising Airplay and Google Assistant compatibility. For now it's an annoying hurdle but once it gets fixed, this could be the speaker to beat.

Sound quality; Easy to get connected; Microphones do good job at picking up voice

Convoluted setup process; Bass is a little much; No Spotify/Apple Music voice support at launch
