Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

I can’t say enough good things about the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and if you want a phone that feels very much like a flagship without spending over £699 then this is the best that’s currently on offer.

Snapdragon 865 even in the UK model; Better battery life than other S20 models; Nice range of colours; Flat 120Hz display

You have to pay more for the faster charger; Secondary cameras aren't the most detailed

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

If there’s one thing I like more than an unabashedly good smartphone, it’s an unabashedly good cheap smartphone. Spoiler alert: The Galaxy S20 FE (or Fan Edition) is precisely that. There are a few ways to look at a phone like this.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

The new Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is the fourth phone in the S line this year. That’s a lot of variants, and it doesn’t include the two Note 20 phones and seemingly innumerable A-series phones Samsung also released this year.

Reasonable price; 120Hz screen; Good cameras

Samsung’s photo tuning is unnecessarily aggressive; Fingerprint sensor a tick too slow; Samsung’s software regressing to a messy norm

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

The high points are undoubtedly the refresh rate, chipset, and cameras, but most other aspects impress too. Really the only significant issue is the phone’s largely plastic build – which at this price isn’t really acceptable, but when it’s allowed for so much tech to be packed in it’s a lot more...

Smooth; high-quality 120Hz screen; Excellent triple-lens camera; Plenty of power

Plastic back; Only FHD+ resolution; Middling 6GB of RAM

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

Triple rear cameras; 120Hz display; strong performance; great battery life; simple design with a flat screen; wireless charging with wireless powershare

No headphone jack; has a plastic back instead of glass; optical fingerprint reader not quite as nice as more expensive ultrasonic models; fast charger costs extra

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

The ideal entry point into Samsung’s premium range, packing in all the best features of the Galaxy S20 while also cutting the superfluous features that only serve to increase the price. It offers solid performance from the camera, all the benefits of Samsung’s OneUI, and a screen that can’t be beat.

Incredible screen that owes a lot to the 120Hz refresh rate; Premium specs; including a top-tier chipset; All the best parts of the S20 for a slightly lower price; No Bixby Button

Premium price; far from what you’d consider “affordable”; Battery life not best in class

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review

Though the switch to glasstic is a bit of a disappointment, there's a lot to love about the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE - including the Snapdragon 865, a first for UK fans, and a gorgeous 6.5in 120Hz AMOLED display.

Beautiful 120Hz AMOLED display; Great battery life; Snapdragon 865 (on 5G model);

'Glasstic' body; Limitations on video recording; Have to pay for faster charger;

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition - Navy SM-G780FZBDXNZ review

The success of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was always going to be dependent on the pricing. At Rs 49,999 and even lower if you snare the right deals. In a way, this will become the new entry point to the Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphone line-up. And a very good one at that.
