Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note 8 to the world Wednesday , looking to put the recall of the Galaxy Note 7 behind it once and for all. I got to spend some time with the new phone. At first glance, the Galaxy Note 8 seems to put Samsung firmly on the road to redemption.

Samsung is back with a new phone in the Galaxy Note series! Many feared that the inglorious history of the Galaxy Note 7 may have been the end of the series, but the reality is far from it. With the Galaxy Note 8, Samsung is seeking to go back to its old strengths in the market of XXL smartphones.

The successor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4/5 is finally here - meet the Galaxy Note8. Wait, what? Okay, Europeans didn't get the Note5 because, you know... Samsung, and we all know how the Note7 lived a shorter product life than it deserved.

In 2016 we were singing the praises of the fantastic, larger-than-life Galaxy Note 7 . We awarded it top honours and, were it not for the small matter of a worldwide recall – following the emergence of a potentially dangerous battery flaw – we’d probably still be recommending it now.

The Note8 is a very good smartphone for all of the same reasons the S8 and S8+ are very good smartphones. It has an amazing display, stunning design, is packed with features (some useful, some not), a powerful chipset, lasts a long time on a charge, and works on every carrier in the US.

Display Absolutely gorgeous; The best smartphone screen on the planet, now slightly bigger, Battery life If you had concerns about the downsized battery and the upsized display, put them to bed - the Note8 lasts plenty long on a charge, Camera The primary rear camera takes absolutely gorgeous shots.

Camera The secondary telephoto lens is a little disappointing, and the live photo bokeh effect is hardly a game-changer; I just don't think Samsung's made the case for a dual camera setup here, Cost The Note8 is ludicrously expensive, at $930 unlocked in the US.

Do Bigger Things The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a huge 6.3" Super AMOLED Infinity Display with Quad HD+ resolution (2960 x 1440 pixels at 521 pixels per inch). Although the screen is huge, the phone itself doesn't reflect this as the elongated display has an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, allowing for a phone...

The dual cameras make the Note 8. Without them, it's a rehashed S8 with a pen. With them it's a photographer's dream. Sure, it's expensive, but if you're spending big on a smartphone – especially an Android one – this is the one.
