OnePlus 9 review

You win some, you lose some. The OnePlus 9 gets you a much better camera array than the OnePlus 8T for just a fraction more, but we get downgraded from a lovely metal sides to a fancy kind of plastic. Is the sacrifice worth it? We think so, especially as the wide camera also gets an upgrade and you can now shoot 8K video in two fields of view. So-so battery life when using the 120Hz mode keeps it away from full marks. And if you want a good camera zoom, consider saving up for a Samsung Galaxy S21 or the step-up OnePlus 9 Pro.

Major camera improvements; Powerful CPU; Ultra-fast charging;

Has plastic sides; Battery life is not amazing; No zoom camera;

OnePlus 9 review

The OnePlus 9 comes with a fix for the most glaring flaw of prior OnePlus flagships: courtesy of a partnership with Hasselblad, the cameras offer better color correction, and both regular and ultra-wide photos look great. The lack of a telephoto lens and other flagship perks found on its Pro sibling aren’t missed too much, given the relatively low price you're paying for high specs and very fast charging. If you’re hunting for a flagship Android phone at an affordable price, the OnePlus 9 is worth considering.

Great specs for the cost; Good camera; Fast battery recharging;

No telephoto camera; No expandable storage; Lack of flagship-material polish

OnePlus 9 Review

The OnePlus 9 is a fantastic phone, with a screen that’s tailor-made for gamers and people who regularly stream movies on their mobile. However, the fact its screen doesn’t feature a variable refresh rate panel puts it a step behind some rivals when it comes to battery life.

Well calibrated screen that’s perfect for gamers and movie fans ; Solid camera with an advanced pro mode for tinkerers ; Outstanding, future proof performance;

Lack of variable refresh rate means the screen eats up battery in its highest setting ; Camera’s image processing can be a little heavy handed;

OnePlus 9 review

The OnePlus 9 is a powerful phone at a reasonable price with a stunning screen. However, it's hampered by a selection of issues that are no longer forgivable.

Fantastic screen; Powerful components; Super fast charging; Oxygen OS;

Colour options limited by specs; No IP rating; Chunky with divisive finish; Camera issues;

OnePlus 9 review: A flagship in disguise

The design may not have wowed us that much, but OnePlus knows its users are all about getting the best performance out of every area of its phones. So if cutting corners and adding in a plastic frame means being able to stick two flagship cameras on the back, add wireless charging, a capacious battery, and market-leading speed, then we think that's a compromise worth making.

Speedy performance; Really fast wired charging; Wireless charging (finally!); Upgraded cameras are good; Vibrant and fluid display;

Plastic frame and chunky build; Wireless charging maxes out at 15W; No official water- or dust-resistance rating;

Oneplus 9 Dual SIM 5G (8GB RAM, 128GB, Astral Black) - BRAND NEW review

The OnePlus 9 has taken the firm somewhat back to its “upstart” roots , offering a top-flight experience for significantly less money than premium smartphone rivals. But to do so the company has cut corners that it hasn’t resorted to in the past, such as using plastic rather than metal for the...

Pros: super slick, long battery, top performance, good 120Hz screen, good software, speedy charging, fast fingerprint scanner, alert slider, good camera, lower cost.

Cons: only three years of software support, camera can oversharpen images, no optical zoom, screen glass not the toughest available, no water-resistance rating, plastic frame.

Oneplus 9 Dual SIM 5G (8GB RAM, 128GB, Astral Black) - BRAND NEW review

True, it’s not the absolute best in any one category, but the OnePlus 9 stays true to its heritage by giving you a flagship-like experience without breaking the bank.

Decent 120Hz display, Strong camera, OxygenOS is slick

Design has taken a backwards step, Not as cheap as it used to be, No OIS on camera

Oneplus 9 Dual SIM 5G (8GB RAM, 128GB, Astral Black) - BRAND NEW review

Just five months from the launch of the OnePlus 8T, should you have waited for the OnePlus 9 instead?

Serious uptick in performance, Colour-accurate screen

Better options for less money, Battery life drop, Hasselblad partnership disappoints
