The Nikon Z7 - the brand's first full-frame mirrorless camera - is also its most well-rounded camera for stills and video, and an exciting indicator for what's to come from the 101 year-old company. But first generation products are rarely perfect, and the Nikon Z7 is no exception.

Hybrid stills and video shooters; photographers looking for a versatile tool for a wide range of subjects in a compact package

Those needing class-leading autofocus performance; faster burst rates; or greater buffer depth

Nikon Z7 Review

The Nikon Z7 is an extremely well-rounded digital camera and suitable for a wide range of photographic and video needs. It packs outstanding image quality and very good 4K video in a lightweight, well-built package with in-body image stabilization. Autofocus is less reliable than the competition and the buffer can be limiting for fast action, but overall, the Z7 is a pleasure to shoot with.

Nikon Z 7

The Z 7 is a first-generation product, and it has some of the expected first-gen problems. There aren't a lot of native lenses available (yet), and its autofocus isn't quite as good as the D850 and the Sony a7R III.

45.7MP full-frame image sensor; 90 percent autofocus coverage; 9fps continuous drive; In-body stabilization; Tilting touch LCD; Superb EVF; Works with Nikon SLR lenses and accessories; 4K video; Weather sealing; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Autofocus could be better; Lens control ring system is too sensitive; Limited native lens selection at launch; Single memory card slot; Omits PC sync socket

I love this camera!

It takes some getting used to, but everything is there where you need it. I do low light interior real estate photography using a heavy AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens. The VR gives me perfect handheld shots to 1/8 sec.

Nikon Z7 Review

The Z6 and Z7 are Nikon's first attempts at a full-frame mirrorless camera system. Although it took Nikon many years to finally come out with its own mirrorless system, it was definitely worth the wait for many Nikon photographers.

So who won the debut mirrorless full-frame camera shootout between Nikon and Canon I'd have to give the initial trophy here to Nikon. Discounting the higher resolution and price, the Z7 is a better all-around camera.

Great 10-bit full-frame 4K video; In-body stabilization; Wide choice of lenses with adapter; Good ergonomics; Excellent image quality

Mediocre autofocus subject tracking; Single card slot uses non-standard XQD format; Touchscreen display doesn't flip around

Nikon Z7

The Nikon Z7 is a worthy contender in the Full-Frame Mirrorless market. It is remarkably polished for a first camera in a completely new platform. This mirrorless takes a 46 MP BSI-CMOS senor paired with an EXCEED 6 processor to deliver a high throughput with 9 FPS at full-resolution.

Excellent detail capture; Very low image noise; Excellent metering; Effecive 5-Axis Image Stabilization; Good colors accuracy; Reliable Automatic White-Balance; Highly sensitive AF; Quick 493-Point AF; Very responsive; Ultra-Sharp EVF; Natural EVF contrast; Solid build quality

Shallow Buffer-Depth; Poor EC button location; Poor Continuous AF; Artifacts from built-in Phase-Detect pixels; Not Exposure-Priority; Occasionally incorrect WB preview; Bizarre Auto ISO; Very short battey-life; Pricey

Nikon Z7 review: A stunning ultra-high-end mirrorless camera

Nikon Z7: Nikon's first full-frame mirrorless snapper smashes it out of the park, but boy is it expensive

Incredible image quality; Superbly flexible autofocus; Gorgeous EVF

Single card slot; Mediocre battery life; Very substantial cost

well made lovely camera

Love the camera for its weight ,photos, video, can crop deeply if required and still get a brilliant photo. Camera is very well made and with the mount can use all your other nikon lenses flawlessly . Kit lens for the Z7 is also excellent and very sharp.

Durable; Great Features; Great Picture Quality; Lightweight; Very versatile especially with the mount; lot of control

learning curve for autofocus tracking

High quality camera in a smaller package

For my purposes, which are primarily landscapes and larger, slower moving wildlife - this is a fantastic camera. Image quality on a par with my D850 in a smaller, lighter package. I have heard some griping about the single card slot versus dual, but the absence of doesn't affect me so I don't really...

Small; lighter; the future of Nikon I think

None so far
