Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

The Nikon Z 5 offers a lot for photographers moving from a Nikon SLR system to mirrorless, even though it omits some of the latest bells and whistles to meet its price point.

24MP full-frame sensor; 5-axis IBIS; Tilting touch LCD; High-magnification OLED EVF; Dust and splash protection; Dual UHS-II card slots; Works with Nikon F lenses via adapter

Cropped 4K recording; Autofocus a step behind Canon and Sony; Meager 4.5fps continuous drive; Z lens library still in development; Few third-party Z lenses available

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

In many respects the Nikon Z5 is a great camera and combined with the compact Nikkor Z 24-50MM F/4-6.3 kit lens, it makes a very attractive choice of full-frame camera for travel or everyday photography - even if the zoom range is a little limiting.

Compact size and full-frame sensor; Nikon Z mount; Best in class viewfinder

Maximum continuous shooting of 4.5fps (frames per second); 1.7x crop applied to 4K video; 24-50mm kits lens is compact but has a limited zoom range

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

Nikon Z5 at a glance: £1449 body only (£1719 with 24-50mm kit lens) 24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor EXPEED 6 image processor 5-axis in-body stabilisation 0.5in, 3,680k-dot OLED EVF 4.5fps burst shooting Dual SD card slotsAfter the release of Nikon’s first APS-C mirrorless camera, it was suspected a...

For and against; Upholds the excellent handing from the Nikon Z6/Z7; Performs well with Fmount SLR lenses via FTZ adapter; Build quality is excellent for a camera at its price point; First full frame Zseries model to offer dual card slots

1.7x crop is applied when shooting 4K (UHD) video; 2450mm kit zoom is likely to be quickly outgrown; Produces cool looking images in AWB mode in sunlight; 4.5fps continuous burst shooting is slow by today’s standard

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

Nikon has once again done what they still do better than everyone else: they made a great camera at an incredible price, and hardly left anything out.

Incredible image quality; Solid autofocus performance; Rugged build quality; Professional functionality; Comfortable ergonomics; Unmatched value

Slow speed & viewfinder blackout a deal-breaker for fast action; 4K 30p video crops away the "full-frame advantage"

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-200mm Lens VOK040YA review

The Nikon Z5 has an enticing set of specifications for the entry-level full-frame user, especially when you consider just how small the camera is. If you are on the lookout for a fantastic everyday or travel camera, or just like the idea of a smaller than usual camera, then the Z5 is certainly...

Solid handling; Great viewfinder; Small and light

Limited frame rate for sports and action; 4K video cropped

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-200mm Lens VOK040YA review

As mirrorless cameras go the Nikon is easy to use, has a wonderful viewfinder, introduces improved autofocus features, and feels pitched to the correct kind of audience. Despite a low burst shooting speed and video capture that's outclassed by the competition, that still all adds up to what's...

Great image quality from full-frame sensor; Huge potential from new Z mount lenses; Electronic viewfinder is of great quality and scale; Autofocus system adds Eye/Face/Pet detection

Video offering much stronger from competition; Low burst shooting speed; Not a full vari-angle screen (it's tilt-angle only); Single area AF can struggle a little in lower light

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-200mm Lens VOK040YA review

The Nikon Z5 is a very solid introduction to the Nikon Z series and the kit lens is a very solid performer as well. There is a considerable saving to be made compared to the Z6 and Z7 and thus it widens the potential market without seriously affecting the end quality.

Excellent quality of results; Superb viewfinder; Dust and drip resistance; Good price point to enter superb Z system; Articulated screen; Built-in VR; Supports focus stacking; WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity; Handles well

Slow AF in low light; No lens hood provided

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-200mm Lens VOK040YA review

The Nikon Z5 is the best entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera you can buy right now. It’s not perfect, but thanks to a blend of great image quality, a reliable autofocus performance, accessible handling and a weather-sealed body and tough body, the Z5 has a lot going for it.

Comfy grip and solid build; Logical control layout; High-resolution EVF; 5-axis AF system; Very capable AF system

Underwhelming burst shooting speed; Disappointing video specs including cropped 4K; Tilt-angle display; not vari-angle

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-200mm Lens VOK040YA review

“The Nikon Z 5 would be a great entry-level full-frame camera if not for its unreliable low light autofocus and slow burst speed.”

Good image quality; Compact; Affordable; Dual SD Slots

Slow low light autofocus; Inconsistent autofocus in mixed/low light; Slow 4.5 fps burst mode
